Expansion of the ‘Red Carpet Corridor’ at DXB
In a move aimed at enhancing the passenger experience, Dubai International Airport (DXB) will expand its innovative “Red Carpet” service. This service allows passengers to efficiently navigate passport control without the traditional requirements of showing a passport or boarding pass.
Previously confined to business class departures, the expanded service will now include arrivals in Terminal 3. This technology-driven corridor enables groups of up to ten people to pass through simultaneously, utilizing biometric data for real-time processing. Introduction of a New Sugar Tax
A new tiered sugar tax system will be implemented as part of a regional initiative by the UAE’s Ministry of Finance to curb the consumption of sugary drinks starting January 1. This revised approach moves away from a flat rate, allowing for a tax model based on the sugar content of beverages.
Under the new classification, drinks will be categorized as high-sugar, moderate-sugar, low-sugar, and those with artificial sweeteners. High-sugar drinks (8g or more of sugar per 100ml) will incur a tax of Dhs1.09 per litre, while moderate-sugar drinks (5g to less than 8g) will be taxed at Dhs0.79 per litre. Low-sugar drinks and those using only artificial sweeteners will remain exempt from taxation.
Shorter Fridays for School Children
Changes in school schedules will begin on January 9, with private school students in Dubai finishing classes earlier on Fridays. Classes will conclude by 11:30 AM, a half-hour reduction from the current noon dismissal. This adjustment synchronizes with UAE-wide shifts in Friday prayer times.
Starting January 2, Friday prayer will commence earlier at 12:45 PM, allowing students and staff to attend congregational prayers without delay. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority has mandated these changes, aiming to facilitate a more efficient school week.
Ban on Single-Use Plastics
Another pivotal change is the introduction of a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic products, effective January 1. This initiative targets a wide range of items, including plastic food containers and beverage cups with plastic lids.
