Tommy Lee Revives Musical Passion with Dolby Atmos in Special Edition of ‘Tommyland’
Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee is set to release a revamped version of his 2005 album, Tommyland: The Ride, titled Tommyland Rides Again, on May 22. This new edition, enhanced with Dolby Atmos technology in his Los Angeles home studio, has reignited Lee’s enthusiasm for his musical projects.
A New Chapter in Music
The updated album features collaborations with notable artists such as Chad Kroeger from Nickelback, Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, and Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys. The original Tommyland: The Ride peaked at No. 62 on the Billboard 200 and included the hit “Good Times,” which served as the theme for the NBC/VH1 reality series Tommy Lee Goes to College.
Lee expressed that his children encouraged him to revisit the album as it marked its 20th anniversary. He stated that upon completing his new studio, he felt compelled to remix his earlier works, including Tommyland: The Ride.
Embracing Dolby Atmos
Lee described his experience with Dolby Atmos as transformative, stating, “Once you hear Dolby Atmos, it’s insane. I’ll never listen to regular stereo again.” He is now exploring the possibility of remixing more of his catalog, diving deeper into the creative process.
The original Tommyland album was a reflection of the rock music landscape in 2005, showcasing a more melodic and song-focused style compared to the heavier sounds of Motley Crue. Lee noted that working solo allows him the freedom to explore various musical styles, likening it to being a child in a sandbox.
New Music and Themes
In addition to the remixed tracks, Tommyland Rides Again introduces a new song titled “Stupid World,” featuring Chad Tepper. This track addresses contemporary issues, with Lee emphasizing its relevance during the Covid pandemic. He remarked on the confusion surrounding reality in today’s world, stating, “Nobody knows what’s real anymore, whether it’s a photograph or a video.”
Lee is excited to share the newly mixed album, highlighting tracks like “Hello Again” and the unique sound effects in “Trying To Be Me.” He acknowledged that the music industry has changed significantly since the original release, with an overwhelming number of songs being released daily on platforms like Spotify.
The Future of Rock Music
Despite the challenges of navigating a saturated market, Lee remains motivated to create music that stands out. He believes that the current environment inspires him to produce exceptional work, even as he reflects on the difficulties artists face in gaining visibility.
As he prepares for the release of Tommyland Rides Again, Lee is also looking ahead to a summer tour with Motley Crue, titled The Return of the Carnival of Sins. This tour will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original concert series and the band’s 45th anniversary. The 33-date tour kicks off on July 17 near Pittsburgh and concludes on September 25 in Ridgefield, Washington.
Lee expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming performances, stating, “The last run we did was all stadiums, which was phenomenal. But I really do love a good outdoor amphitheater, shed vibe.” He also mentioned that the band is considering fan input for the setlist, which has led them to revisit some older tracks.
Looking Ahead
Motley Crue has released new songs in recent years, including “Dogs of War” and a cover of the Beastie Boys’ “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (to Party).” Lee indicated that while the band is continuously writing, fans may need to wait until 2027 for more new material.
