Teen Sensation Fonseca Shocks Djokovic, Ending His Quest for 25th Grand Slam Title at French Open
Paris: In a remarkable turn of events at the French Open, Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca stunned Novak Djokovic, defeating the veteran in a thrilling third-round match. This loss leaves Djokovic’s pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title in limbo, as he fell short in a five-set battle that lasted four hours and 53 minutes.
Djokovic, the 39-year-old Serbian star, was unable to capitalize on a two-set lead, ultimately losing 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. This defeat prolongs his wait to surpass Margaret Court’s record, especially following the earlier exit of world number one Jannik Sinner, which opened up the draw in Paris.
Fonseca’s victory marks a significant milestone, making him the first teenager to defeat Djokovic in a Grand Slam match. The young Brazilian has now established himself as a formidable contender for a major title.
“I actually didn’t believe I could win the match,” Fonseca stated. “I just played and enjoyed being on the court. What an idol we have and what a pleasure it was to step onto the court against him, so I thank him. I’m very happy.”
He added, “I was just trying to hit the ball as fast as I could. Djokovic doesn’t miss, and we still think he’s 20. At the end of the match, he was more fit than me, which is crazy. But I felt as it was getting darker, it was a bit slower, and for me that was better, because I could produce a bit more power, for sure.”
Fonseca dedicated his hard-fought win to his mother, who celebrated her birthday in the stands. Djokovic, meanwhile, received a standing ovation from the crowd of 15,000 as he exited the court. In his post-match press conference, he acknowledged Fonseca’s skill and determination.
“Incredible match to be part of. Obviously a tough one for me to lose, being two sets to love up, but huge credit to Joao for really deserving to win the match,” Djokovic remarked. “He, without a doubt, was the better player in important moments in those crucial fourth and fifth sets. Some amazing exchanges and points. He just found incredible shots, lines. It was amazing.”
Djokovic expressed that while it was challenging to face a player of Fonseca’s caliber, he felt he had played well overall. “It’s just that he was just better,” he added.
First-Time Champion
As Djokovic contemplates his future in the tournament, Roland Garros is set to crown a first-time Grand Slam champion this year. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is absent due to a wrist injury, and Sinner’s early exit has further opened the field.
“He definitely has the potential,” Djokovic said regarding Fonseca’s chances of winning the title.
Alexander Zverev is also in contention after overcoming French player Quentin Halys with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Other notable results include Dutchman Jesper De Jong defeating 13th seed Karen Khachanov and Czech Jakub Mensik stunning eighth seed Alex de Minaur.
In the women’s draw, four-time champion Iga Swiatek advanced by defeating fellow Pole Magda Linette 6-4, 6-4. Elina Svitolina, Belinda Bencic, Marta Kostyuk, and Mirra Andreeva also progressed to the next round.
Early Marker
Djokovic began the match strongly, showcasing his experience and skill by winning five of the first six games on a sun-drenched Court Philippe Chatrier. He executed a stunning lob and several powerful forehand winners, demonstrating his mastery of the clay surface. Despite a late comeback attempt from Fonseca, Djokovic secured the first set.
Fonseca, who was just a child when Djokovic won his first Grand Slam title in 2008, responded by raising his level in the second set. However, he dropped his serve in the fifth game, allowing Djokovic to take control and close out the set.
The Brazilian fought back, breaking early in the fourth set and leveling the match with impressive ball-striking that left Djokovic momentarily stunned. Fonseca, trailing 1-3 in the final set, displayed remarkable composure, breaking Djokovic to take a 6-5 lead. He then sealed the victory with three consecutive aces.
“I just believed I could do the aces, it was crazy,” Fonseca said. “I’ve never done that before. I’m super happy that I could finish like this.”
Fonseca’s next challenge will be against Casper Ruud, a two-time runner-up, who triumphed in his own marathon match against Tommy Paul.
