Star Trek 60th Anniversary Celebration Highlights Italian Global Series’ Star-Studded Return
The Italian Global Series (IGS) festival is set to return next month, bringing together a vibrant mix of stars, writers, actors, producers, and creatives from the television industry in two coastal cities in Italy. This year’s festival will prominently feature the 60th anniversary celebration of Star Trek, marking a significant highlight of the event.
Celebrations and Special Events
In addition to the Star Trek milestone, the festival will honor the 50th anniversary of Franco Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth, a pivotal work in television history originally intended to be crafted by Ingmar Bergman. Furthermore, IGS will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Un posto al sole, Italy’s longest-running soap opera. The cast will engage in discussions about an episode alongside actress, director, and comedian Michela Giraud, a noted fan of the series.
Notable Attendees
The festival will feature a lineup of prominent British actors, including John Hannah, known for his roles in Benidorm Is Murder and The Mummy, and Bertie Carvel, who appears in the upcoming Harry Potter series. Under the artistic direction of Marco Spagnoli, the festival unveiled a comprehensive program that includes selections for the International Competition, a series of conversations, and notable Italian premieres.
The series showcase will be open to the public and will take place in Rimini from July 3 to July 6, followed by Riccione from July 7 to July 10. The festival will conclude in Rimini on July 11 with a closing night ceremony, during which the winners of the competitive sections will be announced.
International Competition and Awards
This year, IGS received over 160 submissions from around the globe, with the final selection for the International Competition featuring 21 series from 15 countries across Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America. The competition will include sections for drama, comedy, and limited series, with the Maximo Awards recognizing the best series, lead actor, lead actress, and creator/director, along with a special jury prize.
Marti Noxon, a U.S. producer known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Mad Men, will preside over the drama series jury. Nicholas Meyer, a director and screenwriter, will lead the limited series jury, while French actor and playwright Bruno Gouery, recognized for his roles in Emily in Paris and The White Lotus, will head the comedy series jury.
Engaging Conversations and Screenings
The festival will host a variety of conversations, including a session titled “Lost in Fellini,” led by Carlton Cuse, featuring Oscar-winning writer and showrunner John Ridley. Another discussion will involve executive producer David W. Zucker and producer Steve Stark, focusing on the future of international production. Additionally, Turkish film and social media stars Ozge Gürel and Serkan Çayoğlu will share insights into their work and public lives.
