PS Miami Revives the Elegance of Air Travel Inside Former Pan Am Headquarters
PS, a private luxury terminal, has officially launched its Miami location within the historic Pan American Airways headquarters at Miami International Airport. This marks the brand’s fourth American outpost and is seen as a significant return to the elegance of air travel.
A Historic Transformation
The Pan Am building is not merely a structure; it symbolizes a vision of travel that shaped the golden age of aviation. The 1960s architecture, which housed Pan Am’s operations, has been meticulously preserved by PS. The company collaborated with RJ Heisenbottle Architects and renowned interior designer Cliff Fong to honor the building’s legacy while reimagining its future.
The design retains the mid-century Brutalist character recognized as a Miami-Dade County Historic Site. Original Pan Am insignias, gold paneling, and reflecting pools have been restored, seamlessly integrated into a design that reflects Miami’s tropical glamour. The use of terrazzo, marble, and smoked glass enhances the building’s identity without feeling like a mere pastiche.
Two Distinct Experiences
PS Miami offers two unique experiences: The Salon and The Private Suite. The Salon serves as a sophisticated social lounge designed for solo and business travelers, providing an elegant space to work, dine, and relax before flights. In contrast, The Private Suite offers fully private, residential-style accommodations that prioritize discretion and comfort, ensuring that every detail is managed before the traveler even arrives.
Both experiences feature PS’s signature services, including private BMW chauffeur transfers, chef-prepared dining, and spa treatments available upon request. The brand’s Control Room acts as a coordination hub, working directly with security and airlines to ensure smooth travel experiences. Later this year, PS Direct will introduce integrated door-to-door transfers, further enhancing the seamless journey from home to destination.
Art and Culture Integration
What distinguishes PS Miami from other luxury lounges is its commitment to integrating art that reflects the building’s historical and cultural significance. The terminal features artist-designed reflecting pools created by Nina Surel, a Miami-based artist and founder of The Collective 62, Miami’s first all-female art collective. Her work draws inspiration from Miami’s natural landscape and cultural history.
The collection includes a stoneware bas-relief mural and a mosaicked pool, utilizing a color palette derived from the subtropical environment. Additional art curation by Creative Art Partners complements this collection, balancing vibrant and expressive pieces that resonate with Miami’s visual rhythm.
Strategic Location Choice
Amina Belouizdad Porter, CEO of PS, highlighted the strategic importance of Miami as the second-busiest airport for international travelers and a vital gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean. The decision to open within the Pan Am building aligns with the company’s mission to redefine the modern travel experience in a location steeped in the romance of air travel.
Emotional Launch Event
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for PS Miami was marked by the presence of former Pan Am flight attendants, adding an emotional layer to the event. Their attendance transformed the launch into a poignant celebration of the legacy of air travel.
The golden age of air travel has not ended; it has simply sought a space worthy of its legacy. At PS Miami, inside the building where Pan Am once revolutionized flying, that legacy has found its home.
