Angine de Poitrine, Peaches, and Others Highlight Polaris Music Prize 2026 Short List
The Polaris Music Prize has announced its 2026 short list, featuring ten nominated albums. This year’s selection process involved a voting pool of 205 music critics, journalists, academics, broadcasters, and curators, who evaluated the entries based solely on artistic merit, disregarding genre and record sales.
Nominees for the 2026 Polaris Music Prize
The following albums have been nominated for the prestigious award:
- Angine de Poitrine, Vol. II
- Aquakultre, 1783
- Begonia, Fantasy Life
- Bibi Club, Amaro
- Charlotte Cornfield, Hurts Like Hell
- Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Laughter In Summer
- Rochelle Jordan, Through The Wall
- Les Louanges, Alouette!
- Peaches, No Lube So Rude
- Tanya Tagaq, Saputjiji
The winner will be revealed at a concert and award ceremony at Massey Hall on September 22, with a prize of $30,000 provided by FACTOR. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Polaris Music Prize will be held at this iconic Toronto venue.
Changes in Selection Process
For the first time, the winning album will be determined by the entire jury voting pool, a significant shift from the previous practice where an 11-person grand jury made the final decision. This change aims to enhance the democratic nature of the award.
Notable First-Time Nominees
This year’s short list includes first-time nominees such as Angine de Poitrine, Aquakultre, Charlotte Cornfield, and Rochelle Jordan. Angine de Poitrine has gained considerable attention following a viral performance on KEXP in February, leading to substantial festival crowds and chart success in multiple countries.
Peaches and Beverly Glenn-Copeland, both influential figures in Canadian music, are also first-time nominees for the album prize. However, they have previously been recognized by the Polaris Music Prize for their earlier works, with Peaches’ The Teaches of Peaches (2000) and Glenn-Copeland’s Keyboard Fantasies (1986) receiving the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize.
As reported by www.billboard.com, the Polaris Music Prize continues to celebrate the diversity and creativity of Canadian music.
Billboard Canada Women in Music 2026 Nominations Open
In related news, nominations are now open for the Billboard Canada Women in Music 2026 event, which celebrates the achievements of women in the music industry. This year’s honorees will join a distinguished list of past recipients, including The Beaches, Cœur de pirate, and Jessie Reyez.
Elizabeth Crisante, Chief Commercial Officer of Billboard Canada, emphasized the importance of this celebration, stating that it highlights the driving forces pushing music forward.
Rogers Acquires Full Ownership of MLSE
In a separate development, Rogers Communications has completed its acquisition of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), becoming the sole owner after purchasing the remaining 25% stake from Kilmer Sports Inc. for $4.35 billion. This acquisition grants Rogers control over prominent sports teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, and Toronto FC, as well as major concert venues like Scotiabank Arena and Coca-Cola Coliseum.
Rogers expects the transaction to finalize in the fourth quarter of 2026, further solidifying its influence in Toronto’s sports and entertainment landscape.
