Camelback Inn Resort Unveils $25 Million Spa Renovation, Enhancing Desert Tranquility
The JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort has announced the completion of a $25 million renovation of its spa, coinciding with the property’s 90th anniversary. This extensive upgrade aims to transform the spa into a serene oasis that reflects the beauty of its Sonoran Desert surroundings.
A Rich History
The Camelback Inn has long been a cherished destination in Scottsdale, Arizona, recognized as one of the first full-service spa resorts in the Southwest. Over the decades, it has served as a retreat for notable figures, including Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Bette Davis, and John F. Kennedy. The resort is also known for being a favorite of J. Willard Marriott Sr., a fact that continues to be shared by the staff.
Design and Features
The newly renovated spa draws inspiration from the natural landscape, featuring limestone walls in sandy beige tones and custom stone mosaics. Sculptural furnishings echo the contours of Camelback Mountain, creating a harmonious connection between the indoor and outdoor environments. The co-ed relaxation area, named “The Sanctuary,” invites guests to unwind in deep chaises or enjoy a cup of tea post-treatment.
The design emphasizes an airy atmosphere, with a thatched ceiling and views of the outdoor pool, providing a refreshing alternative to the darker, more enclosed spaces typical of many spas. A variety of wellness amenities are available, including ice showers, aromatherapy steam rooms, Himalayan salt saunas, and hot tubs, all set against terra cotta-style walls adorned with custom cacti sculptures. The renovation aims to “blur the line between indoors and out,” promoting relaxation and reconnection with nature.
Outdoor Hydrotherapy Circuit
The Spa at Camelback Inn features a unique multi-temperature hydrotherapy circuit that is entirely outdoors. Guests can transition from a main pool to a salt pool and a cold plunge while enjoying the desert sun. The pool area is enhanced by cascading waterfall spouts, strategically positioned to target stress points on the body.
Innovative Wellness Spaces
Among the most notable additions is the “Stillness Lounge,” designed to extend the wellness experience after treatments. This space features zero-gravity loungers, weighted blankets, eye masks, and noise-canceling headphones. The lounge aims to help guests maintain a state of calm following their spa services, offering soothing soundtracks and guided meditations.
Pathways to Well-Being
The spa offers four distinct “Pathways to Well-Being,” each focusing on a specific area of wellness. The “Detox” pathway includes a juniper sage grounding massage and an adobe clay detox. The “Soothe” pathway features a facial and a lipid body renewal treatment. The “Harmonize” pathway focuses on balancing the body through invigorating massages, while the “Restore” pathway offers hydrating and brightening treatments.
In addition to these services, guests can participate in instructor-led classes such as sound baths, breathwork, yoga, and meditation. Guided hikes up Mummy Mountain and healthy options at the spa’s new Ora Cafe further enhance the wellness offerings.
Commitment to Heritage and Future
Richard Romane, general manager of JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, expressed pride in the spa’s transformation. He stated that the renovation reflects a commitment to providing a personalized and restorative environment where guests can reconnect with themselves and the healing energy of the desert.
