Michael J. Fox Defies Parkinson’s Odds, Returns to Acting After Six-Year Hiatus
Michael J. Fox, diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, was initially told by doctors that he would have only a decade left to act. The foundation aims to raise $700 million in new commitments this year, nearly tripling the U.S. government’s funding for Parkinson’s research in 2025. Brooks stated, “I’m not aware of any other disease condition, that isn’t a rare disease, where individual philanthropy out-funds the U.S. government.”

Fox’s acting career has evolved, with roles in Scrubs, Boston Legal, and Curb Your Enthusiasm following his hiatus. His portrayal of Louis Canning in The Good Wife showcased his ability to blend humor with the realities of living with Parkinson’s. He described this experience as a way to tap into a vulnerability that he had previously hidden.
In Shrinking, Fox reached a new milestone by portraying a character who interacts with another Parkinson’s patient, played by Harrison Ford. Fox expressed appreciation for Ford’s performance, noting the genuine connection they developed on set.

Brooks remarked on the promising developments in research, stating, “Scientific insights that come directly from patient experience and patient data, they are the real accelerators — and it looks more promising now than it ever has.”
Fox emphasized the importance of daily perseverance, stating, “We have to find a way to get through every day, and if we can find a way to get through every day and at the same time be fueling for our actions and our deeds and our philanthropy, then that’s a great thing.”
