Bruce Hornsby Overcomes Burnout to Release Ambitious New Album ‘Indigo Park’
Bruce Hornsby has unveiled his latest album, Indigo Park, which was released on April 3. The album’s “origin story” is described by Hornsby as “very clear,” despite the fact that he initially had no plans to create it. This new release is part of a prolific period in Hornsby’s career, which spans four decades and includes his triple-platinum debut album, The Way It Is.
A Prolific Career
Since 2019, Hornsby has released five albums in six years, including Absolute Zero, which was crafted from unused instrumental pieces he composed while scoring for filmmaker Spike Lee. He has also collaborated with the New York chamber group yMusic. Indigo Park continues this trend, showcasing Hornsby’s versatility and creativity.
The Creative Process
Hornsby expressed that he was initially trying to take a break from songwriting, feeling creatively burnt out. However, a new song idea emerged, which became the reflective title track of Indigo Park. He noted that the idea persisted in his mind, compelling him to engage with it despite his initial resistance. After several months of contemplation, he decided to fully explore the concept and write the song.
He described the experience of writing the song as profound, stating that he felt “chills” during the process, indicating a strong emotional connection to the music. This prompted him to continue writing, ultimately leading to the completion of the album.
Collaborations and Musical Exploration
Indigo Park features guest appearances from notable artists, including Bonnie Raitt, Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, and Blake Mills. The album also includes songwriting collaborations with Robert Hunter and one of the last recordings by Bob Weir. Hornsby has characterized this album as one of his most ambitious and stylistically diverse among his 22 studio releases. He plays piano throughout the ten tracks and incorporates a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar on six of the songs.
Hornsby aims to push the boundaries of popular music, seeking to create sounds that are innovative and unique. He co-produced the album with Tony Berg and Will Maclellan, primarily recording at the renowned Sound City studio in Van Nuys, California.
Themes of Mortality and Aging
Throughout Indigo Park, themes of aging and mortality are prevalent. Hornsby reflects on these concepts in his lyrics, expressing a desire to gain wisdom and perspective as he grows older. The title track encapsulates this sentiment, with lyrics that celebrate life and encourage listeners to embrace their experiences.
The album also features a playful side, particularly in the track “Ecstatic,” which includes elements inspired by AAU basketball cheers and features the Louisiana State University women’s basketball team in its music video. Hornsby noted that Raitt’s contribution to the track was unexpected but fitting, highlighting her adaptability as an artist.
A Legacy of Growth
Despite his success, Hornsby has often critiqued his earlier work, stating that he finds some of his earlier releases “unlistenable.” He acknowledges that while many recognize him for his hit song “The Way It Is,” he believes that his artistic evolution has been overlooked. He emphasizes the importance of creative freedom, stating that he has never allowed himself to be confined by the expectations of his audience.
Hornsby and his band, the Noisemakers, are set to embark on a tour following the release of Indigo Park, with dates scheduled through October. He is also collaborating with actor Jeff Daniels on music for a new play, indicating that his creative pursuits are far from over.
Hornsby has hinted at future projects, including a song inspired by Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun, which he describes as having a Beatles/Beach Boys vibe.
