UAE Police Strengthen Community Bonds Through Acts of Kindness Amid Heavy Rain Crisis
Dubai: The police force in the UAE not only upholds law and order but also embodies a spirit of compassion and care for the community. Recent heavy rains have prompted numerous stories on social media showcasing the kindness of police officers who went beyond their duties to assist those in need. These accounts reflect a nation where citizens feel secure, thanks to those who respond with empathy during critical moments.
Unexpected Help in a Race Against Time
One particularly poignant story emerged on March 23, when heavy rain caused significant traffic delays between Dubai and Sharjah. Long-time UAE resident Lamiaa Abdelaal faced a dire situation as her 21-year-old son, Yassin Sedhom, was en route to chemotherapy. The family spent three hours stuck in traffic, struggling to reach the hospital.
During this extended commute, Yassin, who has Type 1 diabetes, experienced a drop in his blood sugar levels. He had previously battled Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, he was declared cancer-free in 2025. However, the cancer returned in January 2026, necessitating urgent medical attention.
In a moment of desperation, Yassin’s father approached a nearby patrol from Sharjah Police, seeking guidance. The officer promptly instructed him to follow, attempting to navigate through the congested roads. Recognizing the urgency, an ambulance and another police vehicle joined the effort.
Lamiaa recounted, “The officer immediately told my husband to follow him. He tried to help us drive faster, but soon, an ambulance and another police car joined us.” The paramedics assessed Yassin’s condition and transported him into the ambulance, while police vehicles cleared the path.
“After that, we were travelling at 100-120 km/h. In less than 20 minutes, we made our way to the hospital. I was tearing up throughout this journey… I couldn’t comprehend what was happening,” she stated.
Upon arrival at the hospital, the police officers departed without seeking recognition. “They all disappeared before we could even thank them. I don’t even know their names,” Lamiaa added.
At the hospital, Yassin received immediate care, stabilizing his condition before beginning chemotherapy.
Saluting the Frontliners
Professor Dr. Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute and President of the Emirates Oncology Society, acknowledged the police’s swift response as a reflection of a deeper national ethos. He expressed gratitude towards the ambulance teams and Sharjah Police for their exemplary service.
“We thank the ambulance teams and Sharjah Police, who were, as always, a shining example in their swift response and humanity toward all citizens and residents. When the boy was brought to the hospital, we were ready to provide him with full support and the required treatment. His condition is stable now, and his chemotherapy sessions will continue as scheduled. We are proud of our frontliners. Situations like this reflect our leadership and the nation’s vision to care for everyone who lives on this blessed land,” he stated.
For Lamiaa, the experience was overwhelming, symbolizing the authorities’ commitment to the community. “In the middle of everything happening… the authorities are taking care of every person… every small problem. That is why Allah will always bless this country and its Rulers,” she remarked.
The following day, a senior officer from Sharjah Police reached out, not for a report, but simply to inquire about Yassin’s well-being. Additionally, Yassin received a visit from police officials who wished him a speedy recovery.
Acts of Kindness in Healthcare Settings
In another instance shared on social media, a parent recounted a heartwarming moment at a hospital in Dubai. As anxiety filled the air, a Dubai Police officer stepped in to comfort her ill child. “What I saw is something you will never see in the news… a Dubai Police officer took my baby in his arms, smiled and calmed him down like his own child,” she wrote.
“This is the real Dubai… not fear, not panic—but humanity, care, and safety.”
In another post, the parent expressed her love for Dubai, emphasizing her positive experiences over the past 22 years. “I don’t panic. Because I live here. I can see the reality. I love Dubai.”
Community Support During Adverse Weather
In Ajman, police officers delivered essential food supplies to residents during the heavy rains. A video shared online depicted a woman at her door, raising her hands in prayer to bless the officers and the nation.
In Dubai, a toddler was seen sharing a high-five with a police officer, showcasing the bond between the community and law enforcement. The parent expressed gratitude for the officers’ diligent service and commitment to safety.
Quiet Reassurance
Numerous residents have expressed appreciation for the police’s tireless efforts, whether easing traffic congestion during adverse weather or providing support to families in need. These individual incidents illustrate a broader narrative of assistance that is offered without expectation of acknowledgment.
Such acts of kindness are not new to UAE residents. The consistent presence of support reinforces the understanding that, in this country, help is always available when needed.
