Dave Mason, Traffic Co-Founder and “Feelin’ Alright” Songwriter, Dies at 79
Dave Mason, the acclaimed singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for his role in the band Traffic, has passed away at the age of 79. His family announced the news on Sunday, expressing profound sadness over his loss. Mason’s contributions to music and his dedication to those he loved were highlighted in their statement.
Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born on May 10, 1946, in Worcester, England, Mason faced significant challenges early in life. At the age of five, he fell 20 feet from a ceiling loft, resulting in a hip injury and a rare disease that required an 18-month hospital stay. This experience forced him to relearn how to walk.
Initially aspiring to join the Royal Air Force, Mason shifted his focus to music at the age of 16. He began playing guitar and singing, quickly becoming a working musician with his first band, The Jaguars. He later formed The Hellions, where he developed a lasting friendship with drummer Jim Capaldi.
Formation of Traffic
Mason and Capaldi collaborated on their first song, “Shades of Blue,” which was recorded as a B-side for a single. They continued to work together, eventually forming The Deep Feeling. Their partnership led to the creation of Traffic, alongside Steve Winwood and Chris Wood.
Traffic’s journey began in a secluded cottage where they wrote and rehearsed for their debut album, Mr. Fantasy, released in 1967. The band’s first single, “Paper Moon,” was followed by Mason’s “Hole in My Shoe,” which reached No. 2 on the U.K. charts.
Mason’s unique style, characterized by whimsical melodies and mellow vocals, complemented Winwood’s contributions on tracks like “Utterly Simple” and “House for Everyone.” His virtuosity on sitar, guitar, and vocals was evident throughout their work.
Solo Career and Collaborations
After leaving Traffic due to artistic differences, Mason recorded his solo single “Little Woman” in 1969. He briefly rejoined Traffic during sessions for their self-titled album, which featured his iconic song “Feelin’ Alright.” Following another departure, he moved to the United States in 1968.
Mason’s career continued to flourish as he collaborated with numerous legendary artists, including Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Michael Jackson. His contributions to music extended beyond his own recordings; he played a significant role as a session musician, notably on Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic” and The Beatles’ “Across the Universe.”
Major Hits and Recognition
In 1977, Mason achieved a significant milestone with his solo hit “We Just Disagree,” co-written with Jim Krueger. This song became a staple of his career, showcasing his songwriting prowess and earning him recognition in the music industry.
Mason’s work in the 1970s included collaborations with various artists and bands, including Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. His single “Only You Know and I Know” became a No. 2 hit. He signed with Blue Thumb Records, releasing the classic album Alone Together in 1970, which peaked in the Top 25.
Later Years and Philanthropic Efforts
Throughout the years, Mason remained a prominent figure in the music scene, performing at major venues and festivals. He faced personal challenges, including struggles with substance abuse, but continued to create music and tour extensively.
In 2004, Mason and Traffic were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, acknowledging their significant contributions to rock music. He released his first solo album in over two decades, 26 Letters, 12 Notes, in 2008, followed by archival recordings in subsequent years.
Mason was also dedicated to philanthropy, supporting organizations like Little Kids Rock, which provides musical instruments and lessons to public school children. He was a founding board member of Yoga Blue, promoting holistic practices for those recovering from substance abuse, and co-founded Rock Our Vets, a charity aiding homeless veterans.
