Nedra Talley Ross, Last Surviving Member of The Ronettes, Passes Away at 80
Nedra Talley Ross, the final surviving member of the iconic 1960s girl group The Ronettes, has passed away at the age of 80. The news was confirmed through a statement on the trio’s social media accounts on April 26. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
A Legacy Remembered
The official statement expressed deep sorrow, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Nedra Talley Ross’ passing. She was a light to those who knew and loved her.” The message highlighted her significant impact on music, noting, “As a founding member of The Ronettes, along with her beloved cousins Ronnie and Estelle, Nedra’s voice, style, and spirit helped define a sound that would change music.”
The Ronettes, known for their classic hits, including the 1963 smash “Be My Baby,” shaped the pop landscape of their era. Talley Ross, along with Ronnie Bennett (later known as Ronnie Spector) and Estelle Bennett, formed the group that would become a staple in pop music history.
Early Musical Influences
Born in 1945, Talley Ross began her musical journey at a young age, inspired by her mother and grandmother, both of whom were singers. In a recent interview, she reflected on her early experiences, stating, “I started singing when I was very young because my mother sang, and my grandmother.” Her mother played a crucial role in nurturing her talent, instilling in her the courage to perform.
Talley Ross emphasized the bond she shared with her cousins, stating, “Part of the reason I believe the Ronettes continued and we were as successful as we were, is because we held each other’s hand when we walked out on stage.” This familial support was pivotal in their rise to fame.
The Formation of The Ronettes
Growing up in New York City, Talley Ross, Ronnie, and Estelle often sang together, initially forming a family act called the Darling Sisters. They later rebranded as Ronnie and the Relatives before settling on the name The Ronettes, a combination of their first names.
In 1963, they auditioned for Phil Spector at Philles Records after honing their performance style in various venues, including Brooklyn’s Fox Theater. Their breakthrough came with “Be My Baby,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming their signature song.

Chart Success and Recognition
The Ronettes produced several notable singles, including “Baby I Love You,” which reached No. 24 in 1963, and “Walking in the Rain,” which peaked at No. 23 in 1964. Their only full-length album, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes, was released in 1964.
In a surprising turn, the 1963 recording of the Christmas classic “Sleigh Ride” climbed to No. 8 on the Hot 100 in 2023, 60 years after its initial release on Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift for You compilation.
The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 12, 2007, with Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones introducing them. During the ceremony, they performed several songs, including “Be My Baby,” receiving a standing ovation.
Personal Life and Later Years
Beyond her time with The Ronettes, Talley Ross pursued a solo career, releasing a contemporary Christian album titled Full Circle in 1978. The album was produced by her late husband, Scott Ross, a media personality she married in 1967. They had four children together.
Her son Ryan reflected on her humility, stating, “She never let stardom go to her head. She would talk to anybody. She was nice to everybody.” He noted that she always prioritized her roles as a mother, sister, and wife over her celebrity status.
Estelle Bennett passed away in 2009, and Ronnie Spector died in 2022, both after battling cancer. Talley Ross’s passing marks the end of an era for The Ronettes, whose influence on music remains significant.
