Angine de Poitrine, PUP, and Others Highlight SOCAN Polaris Song Prize Short List

The SOCAN Polaris Song Prize has unveiled its second-ever short list, showcasing a diverse array of Canadian musical talent. This year’s nominees include Angine de Poitrine, Charlotte Cornfield, PUP, Patrick Watson & Martha Wainwright, and Charlotte Day Wilson featuring Saya Gray.

Prize Details and Ceremony

In collaboration with the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), the winner of the SOCAN Polaris Song Prize will receive a cash award of $10,000, which will be distributed among the song’s Canadian performers and credited songwriters. The recipient will be announced during a concert and award ceremony at Massey Hall on September 22, hosted by musician and broadcaster Odario Williams.

2026 Short List

The following songs have been nominated for this year’s SOCAN Polaris Song Prize:

• Angine de Poitrine – “Fabienk”
• Charlotte Cornfield – “Hurts Like Hell”
• PUP – “Hunger For Death”
• Patrick Watson & Martha Wainwright – “House on Fire”
• Charlotte Day Wilson, featuring Saya Gray – “Lean”

Jennifer Brown, CEO of SOCAN, emphasized the significance of the nominations, stating that “sometimes, a song is so powerful it stands on its own and demands to be heard.” The short list was narrowed down from a long list of 20 songs, which included tracks from artists such as Begonia, Les Louanges, Aquakultre, and Rochelle Jordan.

Notable Achievements

Among the five nominated artists, Angine de Poitrine and Charlotte Cornfield have also made it onto the Polaris Music Prize album short list for their respective works, Vol. II and Hurts Like Hell. The Polaris Music Prize jury, consisting of 205 members from across Canada, is responsible for curating and voting on both the long list and short list.

Since its inception, the Polaris Music Prize has recognized outstanding Canadian music, with the inaugural award going to Mustafa for his song “Gaza is Calling.”

SOCAN’s Recent Developments

In a related development, SOCAN has announced its acquisition of the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA). This strategic move aims to consolidate the administration of performance and mechanical royalties under one organization. SOCAN has reached an agreement with SoundExchange, the current owner of CMRRA, which has been managing reproduction rights in Canada for over 50 years.

Jennifer Brown remarked on the acquisition, stating, “Bringing CMRRA and SOCAN together is an investment in the future of Canadian music. United, we’ll strengthen rights administration for publishers, songwriters, and composers.”

Both SOCAN and CMRRA play crucial roles in the licensing and distribution of royalties, with SOCAN achieving an all-time revenue record of $587 million last year, distributing over $511 million to its rightsholders. CMRRA also celebrated its 50th anniversary while welcoming 477 new client affiliations.

Michael Huppe, president and CEO of SoundExchange, expressed confidence in SOCAN’s capabilities, noting that the acquisition will benefit creators, publishers, and the broader music community.
