Mason Mount’s Father Slams Michael Owen as ‘Fool’ Following Critique of Midfielder’s Performance
Mason Mount has faced criticism from pundit Michael Owen after making his first start in five months during Manchester United’s goalless draw against Sunderland last weekend. The match marked a significant return for Mount, who completed the full 90 minutes at the Stadium of Light after being absent from the previous fixture, a 3-2 victory over Liverpool.
Mount’s Injury Struggles
The 27-year-old midfielder, who transferred from Chelsea to Manchester United for £60 million in 2023, has experienced a challenging period marred by injuries. These setbacks have limited him to just 70 appearances over nearly three seasons. This season, Mount initially sustained an injury in December, causing him to miss two matches. Subsequently, another injury sidelined him for six games between February and March.
After rejoining the squad for a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in March, Mount had only played 26 minutes until his recent start against Sunderland. His performance in the goalless draw has drawn scrutiny, particularly from Owen, who expressed doubts about Mount’s impact on the team.
Owen’s Critique
Owen, commenting on Sky Sports, stated that Mount has not lived up to the expectations that accompanied his transfer. He remarked, “Mason Mount is working hard, but right now he’s not performing anywhere near the level Manchester United expected when they signed him.” He noted that Mount appeared slow in possession and lacked influence in midfield, highlighting the absence of players like Casemiro as a factor in the team’s struggles.
Owen further emphasized that Sunderland appeared more energetic and sharper in midfield, suggesting that Manchester United requires greater intensity and personality from Mount in such crucial matches.
A Father’s Defense
In response to Owen’s comments, Mount’s father, Tony, took to social media to defend his son, labeling Owen a “fool” for his critique. He pointed out that Mount’s long absence from starting matches likely contributed to his perceived lack of sharpness. “Maybe not starting a game for five months has something to do with looking rusty,” he stated.
Mount’s Confidence
Despite the criticism, Mount remains confident in his abilities and the contributions he can make to Manchester United. He expressed his determination, stating, “I will always back myself. I know what I’m about and what I can bring.” He also reflected on his time at the club, noting, “I love being a part of a massive club. It’s my third season and it’s flown.”
Mount acknowledged that he has gained experience and is eager to contribute more in the upcoming season. He expressed excitement about being part of the effort to restore the club to its former glory, mentioning his previous success in the FA Cup and his aspirations for future achievements in the Premier League.
Carrick’s Support
Interim head coach Michael Carrick has expressed his support for Mount, emphasizing his value to the team. Carrick stated, “He is certainly a team player… there is loads to come from Mason. We’ve just got to give him the time to get fit again and be patient with that.”
Mount’s future at Manchester United may depend on the club’s summer transfer plans, as there are indications that the team is looking to acquire at least two new midfielders. Potential targets include Carlos Baleba, Mateus Fernandes, Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Ederson from Atalanta.
