ADNOC Secures $2 Billion in Green Financing from Korea Trade Insurance Corporation
Strategic Move Towards Sustainable Energy
ADNOC has successfully entered into a significant green financing agreement amounting to $2 billion, aimed at supporting lower-carbon projects across its expansive operations. This milestone was made public during the visit of Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, who serves as the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology as well as ADNOC’s Managing Director and Group CEO, to South Korea.
Backing from Korean Export Credit Agency
The financing agreement is notably backed by the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation (K-SURE), marking ADNOC’s inaugural green financing initiative supported by a Korean export credit agency. This deal follows a previous $3 billion financing arrangement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) that was finalized in 2024. With these two arrangements, ADNOC has successfully secured a cumulative total of $5 billion in green funding over the last 18 months, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to green finance.
Commitment to Sustainable Finance
This funding initiative aligns with ADNOC’s broader objective of integrating sustainable finance into its growth strategy. Structured under the company’s Sustainable Finance Framework, the financing will be directed towards eligible projects that meet international standards in sustainable finance. An independent evaluation by Sustainable Fitch has confirmed that ADNOC’s framework is in accordance with global sustainable finance principles.
Leadership Comments on Financial Strategy
Khaled Al Zaabi, ADNOC’s Group Chief Financial Officer, emphasized the company’s dedication to transforming energy systems while upholding robust capital discipline. “This facility reflects ADNOC’s commitment to financing the transformation of energy systems while maintaining strong capital discipline. Through our partnership with K-SURE, we are expanding access to green finance, deepening our economic ties with South Korea and strengthening ADNOC’s position as a leader in lower carbon energy,” he stated.
ADNOC’s Position in Lower Carbon Energy
ADNOC stands out as one of the most carbon-efficient oil and gas producers in the industry. As part of its commitment to sustainability, the company aims to decrease its operational carbon emissions intensity by 25% by the year 2030. This effort will be supplemented by a substantial $23 billion investment targeted at decarbonizing operations and promoting the development of new energy sources, including hydrogen, geothermal, and renewable energy technologies.
Participation in Global Initiatives
In addition to its financial commitments, ADNOC is a founding member of the Oil and Gas Decarbonisation Charter (OGDC). This coalition comprises both international and national oil companies committed to reaching zero methane emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by or before 2050. ADNOC’s participation in such initiatives underscores its commitment to leading efforts in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within the industry.
Enhancing Economic Collaboration
The partnership with K-SURE not only facilitates access to green financing but also strengthens economic collaborations between ADNOC and South Korea. This relationship is indicative of ADNOC’s strategic approach towards fostering international partnerships that focus on sustainable development in the energy sector.
ADNOC’s Pioneering Role in Green Finance
ADNOC’s recent agreements and initiatives position it as a key player in the movement towards sustainability within the energy sector. By leveraging financial tools and international partnerships, the company aims to accelerate its transition towards a decarbonized future.
Future Prospects in Sustainable Energy
As ADNOC continues to move forward with its ambitious plans, the focus on green financing signifies a pivotal shift in the operations of traditional energy companies. This strategy is expected to pave the way for additional investments in innovative technologies and projects that align with global sustainability goals.
