Major Renovation Enhances Al Hamra Golf Course
Al Hamra Golf Club in Ras Al Khaimah has officially reopened all 18 holes following an extensive renovation project. This initiative, which included significant changes to the back nine, was implemented to enhance the golfing experience while preserving the unique character of the course.
The renowned course architect, involved in the original design, played a key role in this 90-day project, which focused on updating several key areas, including holes 15, 16, and 17, while also making improvements to a couple of front nine holes.
Redesign Highlights: Holes 15, 16, and 17
The most notable changes occurred on the 15th, 16th, and 17th holes. The 15th hole has been restructured to feature a larger green and improved surrounding area. This adjustment allows for a more forgiving approach, particularly for long iron or hybrid shots, while maintaining the distinctive bunkering that characterizes the hole.
The 16th hole now measures an extended 492 yards thanks to a new tee addition. The multi-tiered green complex, spanning over 40 yards, has been redesigned to add complexity and challenge to this pivotal hole.
The 17th hole has also seen an increase in tournament length, accompanied by a strategic redesign that includes new bunkering along the left side of the fairway. The expanded green now features a slope that presents additional challenges and opportunities for players.
Enhancements to Front Nine: Holes 6 and 8
In addition to the back nine adjustments, the sixth and eighth holes have also undergone significant modifications. On the sixth hole, the fairway landing area has shifted slightly to the right, paired with the reconfiguration of a bunker that refines shot strategy without altering the hole’s original feel.
The eighth hole features a new tee complex situated to the left of the existing tees, providing golfers with a fresh playing angle that enhances the overall experience.

Benoy Kurien, Group Chief Executive Officer at Al Hamra, remarked, “The renovation of Al Hamra Golf Club marks another important milestone in our vision to position Ras Al Khaimah as one of the region’s leading lifestyle and leisure destinations.” He continued, emphasizing the investment in creating world-class experiences that cater to both residents and visitors.
Paul Booth, General Manager of Al Hamra Golf Club, added, “Our primary goal has been to preserve the character and charm of Al Hamra Golf Club while introducing new design features that improve strategy, aesthetics, and playability.” According to Booth, collaborating once again with the original architect allows them to honor the course’s design philosophy while integrating fresh elements that are appealing to golfers of varying skill levels.
Operational Continuity During Renovation
Throughout the duration of the renovation project, Al Hamra Golf Club successfully maintained an operational 18-hole course. Members and guests were able to play a full round thanks to a strategic arrangement that kept 12 holes active. This approach involved utilizing various tee placements to create unique six-hole loops for players as preparations continued for the course’s full reopening.
Al Hamra’s Strategic Positioning
With its recent renovations, Al Hamra Golf Club is poised to take center stage in Ras Al Khaimah. The club is strategically located opposite the forthcoming Wynn Al Marjan Island, set to be the UAE’s first integrated resort development scheduled to open in 2027.
