Alexandra Burke, the winner of The X Factor in 2008, is preparing to take on the iconic role of soul legend Chaka Khan in a new West End musical titled I’m Every Woman: The Chaka Khan Musical. The production is set to run for ten weeks at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre starting next month. Burke has expressed her commitment to honoring Khan’s legacy, admitting that she has been emotionally invested in the role, often bringing it home to her fiancé, Darren Randolph, and their two young children.

Burke, who gained fame with her rendition of Hallelujah, which sold over a million copies, has a successful career that includes multiple No. 1 hits and performances in major West End productions like The Bodyguard and Chicago. However, she acknowledges that portraying Chaka Khan presents a unique challenge. Burke stated, “I’m anxious because I want to do it justice. It’s the most intense role I’ve ever done in my life.”
The musical will explore various aspects of Khan’s life, including her civil rights activism, struggles with the music industry, and battles with addiction. Burke is particularly focused on conveying the emotional depth of Khan’s experiences, saying, “People are going to be really shocked and surprised at what she went through, and the fact that she’s still standing. But it’s an honor to play her.”
Balancing Family Life
Despite her commitment to the role, Burke is determined to maintain a balance between her professional and personal life. She revealed that during earlier performances in Hackney, Coventry, and Eastbourne, she found herself “sadly taking the role home” to her family. Randolph, a former Irish footballer, advised her to leave the character behind when she left the theater.
Burke admitted, “I’m not a trained actress. I go with the vibe and I do what I’m told. I’ve got a good gut instinct, directors have told me, but I carry that character the whole way through.” To help separate her work from home life, she has devised a plan to use a specific perfume for her performances, which she will wash off immediately after the show.

Burke shared that she carries a bottle of her late mother’s Chanel No. 5 with her but plans to keep it away from her portrayal of Khan. Her mother, Melissa Bell, a soul singer who passed away nine years ago, remains a significant influence in Burke’s life.
At the Fragrance Foundation UK Awards, where Burke performed, she expressed her support for various charities, including The Alzheimer’s Society, which resonates with her due to a family member’s condition. Burke emphasized the importance of giving back, stating, “It means so much to me to know how much this Foundation supports others and how much they give back.”
Family Dynamics and Future Plans
Burke’s children, aged four and two, are her biggest fans and have developed an interest in Chaka Khan and Michael Jackson. She noted, “My kids think I’m Chaka Khan. They’re obsessed!” The musical is produced by Adrian Grant, known for his work on Thriller Live, which celebrates Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5.
Despite her busy schedule, Burke is committed to being present for her family. She often wakes up early to train and prioritizes spending time with her children after performances. When touring, her kids sometimes accompany her to rehearsals, cared for by the production team and a nanny. Burke remarked, “I never feel that I’m not there, which is nice.”
While she and Randolph got engaged in 2024, they have yet to set a wedding date. Burke mentioned, “I’m too busy to plan a wedding at the moment, but we’re getting there.” She also expressed a desire for a third child, recalling her mother’s insistence on marriage before expanding the family.
As Burke prepares for her upcoming performances, she looks forward to a rare night out after the Fragrance Foundation UK Awards, where she will enjoy a glass of red wine before returning to her responsibilities as a mother.
