Annecy Animation Festival Unveils Must-See Premieres and Showcases for 2026
The Annecy Animation Festival is set to begin on Sunday, June 21, drawing industry leaders and animation enthusiasts to the picturesque lakeside town in the French Alps. This festival is recognized as the largest animation film festival globally, serving as a vital platform for both established studios and emerging talents.
The festival is renowned for showcasing major studio projects and independent films, making it a key event for scouting new animation talent. This year’s edition promises six days filled with premieres, panels, and presentations, coinciding with the MIFA industry market from June 23 to 26.
World Premieres
The festival will kick off with the world premiere of Minions & Monsters, the third installment in the Illumination/Universal franchise, marking the only major Hollywood feature debuting at the event this year. Additionally, a variety of small-screen premieres will take place, including the first two episodes of Bandai Namco Filmworks’ anticipated Ghost in the Shell anime series on June 22, and Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall on June 23, directed by Jeff Wamester. The Rick and Morty spin-off series President Curtis will premiere on June 24.
The festival will conclude on Saturday, June 27, with the world premiere of the short film Lysistrata, the last work of the acclaimed animator Richard Williams, known for Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Thief and the Cobbler.
Award Contenders
Annecy has a history of highlighting animated films that later become award contenders. This year’s lineup includes notable entries such as In Waves, directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen, which premiered at Cannes and was acquired by Netflix for international distribution outside of France. Other contenders include Leah Nelson’s Tangles, featuring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Seth Rogen, and Iron Boy, directed by Louis Clichy, which recently won the Special Jury Prize at Cannes. The festival will also showcase Muyi, a 2D drama set in China, directed by Julien Chheng.

The festival serves as a platform for studios and streaming services to announce new projects and provide sneak peeks. Aardman Studios, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will host a special session featuring co-founders Peter Lord and David Sproxton, along with Oscar-winning director Nick Park and studio CCO Sarah Cox.
On Monday, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation President Bill Damaschke will reveal the division’s new lineup, including exclusive footage from The Cat in the Hat and Bad Fairies. This year’s must-see presentations include Toei Animation’s Monkey Quest, which will be showcased on Monday, and Netflix’s Steps, a reimagining of the Cinderella story, on Tuesday. Wednesday will feature Nicolas Hess’ reboot of the classic anime Astro Boy.
Discoveries and Hidden Gems
In addition to major premieres, Annecy remains a venue for auteur animation and lesser-known works. This year’s lineup includes the Taiwanese 2D rotoscope drama Welcome to Dolly’s House, which follows a YouTube star facing a life-altering crisis. The Filipino documentary 58th, directed by Carl Joseph Papa, recounts a tragic massacre from 2009.
