Archer Aviation’s Ambitious Expansion in the GCC
Archer Aviation, a leading US manufacturer of electric aircraft, is making significant strides toward launching its air mobility services in Saudi Arabia and the broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Chief Executive Officer Adam Goldstein confirmed that the company is engaged in “deep” discussions with Saudi authorities and major giga-project initiatives.
Goldstein stated, “We’re eyeing the entire GCC… I do think you will see aircraft here in Saudi soon,” during a conversation at the Future Investment Initiative held in Riyadh. He emphasized the long-standing dialogue between Archer Aviation and Saudi officials, working collaboratively with regulators to create a comprehensive framework for operations.
Regulatory Framework and Air Mobility Infrastructure
As part of its preparations, Archer has been collaborating with the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) in Saudi Arabia to establish the necessary regulatory pathway for its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Goldstein noted, “You’ll start to hear more on that,” signaling upcoming developments in regulatory approvals.
Founded in 2018 and based in San Jose, California, Archer is focused on developing eVTOL aircraft specifically designed for urban and inter-city travel. The company has gone public and successfully raised over $1 billion to support the development and certification of its flagship model, named Midnight.
In discussing Saudi Arabia’s potential, Goldstein pointed to ambitious projects like NEOM and the Red Sea initiative. “Saudi would be a great market … as well as some of the big giga projects, Red Sea, NEOM and several others,” he stated, highlighting the opportunities for air mobility in these regions.
Launch Timeline and Initial Market Strategy
When asked about the timeline for operational launches in Saudi Arabia, Goldstein suggested the possibility of beginning within the next three to four years, particularly in Riyadh and other major tourism centers. He indicated that the company is focused on finalizing frameworks before embarking on operations.
Archer plans to leverage existing air traffic infrastructure commonly used by helicopters, minimizing disruptions in current airspace management. “The airspace exists today because there are helicopters today … We’re simply just taking a new product … and putting them into the existing airspace, existing infrastructure to help … as little change as possible,” he explained.
Pricing Strategy and Public Accessibility
Archer Aviation aims to establish services that are accessible to the general public, though initial operations may target the higher end of the rideshare market. Goldstein projects that as operational scales increase, costs will decline, ultimately allowing a competitive price point. “The ambition is to actually have a product that’s a similar-priced product to what Ubers are today,” he stated, reflecting the company’s intention to democratize air mobility.
Saudi Arabia has been investing heavily in innovative mobility technologies as part of its Vision 2030 strategy, aimed at diversifying its economy and modernizing transportation systems.
