Christian Nodal’s ‘Un Vals’ Director Acknowledges Controversy Over Model Casting: ‘It Was Our Mistake’
The director of Christian Nodal’s music video “Un Vals” has addressed the backlash surrounding the casting of the lead model, who has drawn comparisons to both Cazzu and Ángela Aguilar, Nodal’s ex-partner and current wife, respectively. The controversy has ignited discussions on social media, prompting a response from the director, Juan Antonio Barbazán.
Director’s Statement on the Controversy
During a virtual press conference held on April 11, Barbazán acknowledged the oversight in casting, stating, “It was our mistake not to realize this could happen.” He clarified that the approval for the video came from JG Music, the record label associated with Nodal, rather than from the artist himself.
The music video, released on April 9, features a split-screen format. Nodal performs on the left side, while a couple’s love story unfolds on the right. His segments were filmed in Guadalajara, Mexico, while the models were filmed in Spain.
Criticism of the Model
The model at the center of the controversy is Dagna Mata, a Mexican content creator based in Madrid. Following the release of the video, she faced significant criticism on social media. In response, Mata posted a video on her Instagram account on April 10, expressing her desire for the focus to remain on her work rather than the comparisons being made. She stated, “I hope the focus remains on what it is — a job — because I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone.”
Mata further expressed her feelings about the situation, saying, “It hurts me to see an artist involved who doesn’t deserve any of this and shouldn’t be compared to anyone else either.” She highlighted her journey, noting, “I had to emigrate from a country to achieve my dream of modeling and growing in the fashion industry.”
Nodal’s Response
In light of the controversy, Nodal shared a message via his Instagram Stories, stating, “I don’t own my name, my image, or my music, and what has happened with the video is proof of that… But my voice, which is the only thing I have left, will always belong to you.” A representative for Nodal and JG Music confirmed that neither would be making further statements regarding the issue.
Insight into the Production Process
Barbazán elaborated on the production process for the music video, explaining that the project encompasses the entirety of Nodal’s album. He noted that two complex videos were created, including one for “Incompatibles,” which was released a month prior. The remaining videos are simpler, utilizing a split-screen format similar to “Un Vals.”
The casting process was conducted by the production company, which sought Mexican actresses in Spain. Barbazán explained that Mata’s profile was presented to them, and they made the decision to cast her. He emphasized that Nodal did not approve the actress, stating, “Christian didn’t see her. The comments about her resemblance to Cazzu and Ángela Aguilar slipped past us.”
Clarification on Marketing Intentions
Barbazán refuted claims that the casting was part of a marketing strategy, asserting that such an idea damages the production company’s reputation. He stated, “At no point was this the intention. The production staff didn’t know who Cazzu was; honestly, we didn’t notice that detail.”
Regarding the decision-making process, he clarified that JG Music is the client, and the production company assumes the videos are approved unless otherwise informed. He acknowledged that Nodal has many commitments, and music videos are just a small part of his overall project.
Nodal’s Preferences for Video Themes
From the outset of their collaboration, Nodal made it clear that he did not want his personal life to be reflected in his music videos. Barbazán noted that the videos should be artistic and solely related to the themes of the songs.
Following the controversy, Nodal reached out to Barbazán, expressing concern over the situation. Barbazán recounted, “He sent me a message saying something like, ‘It seems like you hate me; you’ve gotten me into a big mess.’” This prompted the production team to investigate the social media reactions.
Acknowledgment of Impact
Barbazán concluded by acknowledging the impact the video has had, stating, “Completely, and I accept responsibility. But ultimately, we all end up hurt: us as the production company, the model, and of course, Nodal.”
