Davina McCall Reflects on ‘Toughest Time’ Marked by Cancer Battles and a ‘Beautiful’ Wedding

Davina McCall, the renowned television presenter, has opened up about her challenging journey over the past year and a half, which included battles with cancer and significant personal changes. Now 58, McCall acknowledges that she was often too hard on herself, especially while trying to balance her responsibilities as a mother and a television host. During this tumultuous period, she faced menopause and other health issues, which added to her stress.

Overcoming Health Challenges

In late 2024, McCall underwent surgery to remove a colloid cyst that posed a serious risk to her health. The procedure required part of her skull to be removed, a harrowing experience that she describes as one of the most difficult times of her life. Following this, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2025. Fortunately, she announced in April that she had received the “all clear” after surgery.

Reflecting on her experiences, McCall stated, “It was the hardest year and a half of my whole life, the end of 2024 and the whole of 2025 was impossibly difficult, but it ended with a wedding, and that was really beautiful.” She recently married her partner, Michael Douglas, and credits him with providing essential support throughout her recovery.

Support from Loved Ones

McCall emphasized the importance of her partner during her health struggles. Douglas, who is also a hair stylist, broke their usual boundaries to help her look her best after her surgeries. She expressed her admiration for him, stating, “I literally haven’t got one pet peeve about him. I fancy him so much. He is like the perfect man. He is everything. He is sensitive and strong.”

Despite his professional background in hairstyling, McCall has always refrained from asking him to do her hair. However, after her brain surgery, she found comfort in his help. “He would go ‘do you want me to blow dry your hair?’ And I would say ‘oh yes please’. It is such a treat, I can never do it as well as he can,” she remarked.

Returning to Work

As McCall prepared to return to her television career, she faced significant self-doubt. She had been on screen for over 30 years and was apprehensive about her ability to perform after her health challenges. Her first job back was on the show “Long Lost Family,” and she requested her notes four days in advance to help her prepare.

“I was terrified because I just thought I can’t do it, I can’t remember things,” she said. However, with Douglas’s encouragement, she found the strength to overcome her fears. After successfully completing her first day back at work, she expressed gratitude to him, saying, “It was the best day of my life. I’m back. I feel like I’m worth something, like I feel purpose again.”

A New Perspective on Life

The experience of facing serious health issues has shifted McCall’s perspective on life. She shared that she had written “letters of wishes” for her children, Holly, Tilly, and Chester, in case she did not survive her surgery. Thankfully, these letters were not needed, but the experience has left a lasting impact on her outlook.

At a recent festival, McCall discussed her desire to explore themes of life and death in her work. She stated, “I would love to talk more about living a life that you love, so that you can die happy. I feel like dying is the last big taboo.”

She recounted her thoughts before surgery, expressing gratitude to the medical team and a sense of peace about the outcome. “I just want to let you know, I’m going to lie down here, and I’m going to let go of the outcome, and you do your best,” she said.

Embracing Life Fully

McCall’s reflections also touched on societal pressures regarding health and longevity. She criticized the obsession with living a long life at the expense of enjoying it. “On your deathbed, you are gonna go, I wish I’d gone clubbing, I wish I’d eaten a freaking banoffee pie,” she said, emphasizing the importance of living fully in the present.

As she approaches her 60th birthday, McCall feels liberated from the fear of judgment. “I am reaching an age where I feel like I can sort of be who I want to be, and I’m not frightened of other people’s judgment anymore,” she stated.

This week, McCall is supporting her best friend, Sarah Hiscox, as she publishes a new book about her journey through addiction and finding love again. The two women share similar experiences and are excited to embrace the next decade of their lives.

Davina McCall has written a foreword for the new book “The Beginning and End of Everything,” by Sarah Hiscox, which is set to be released soon.
