Delhi-NCR Braces for Above-Normal Temperatures Next Week; Heatwave Conditions Expected in Jharkhand and Kerala

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted above-normal temperatures for the National Capital Region (NCR) next week. This prediction comes on the heels of a brief but intense rainfall that provided temporary relief from the soaring heat in Delhi, Noida, and surrounding areas. While some atmospheric instability is anticipated over the weekend, it will be succeeded by a week of persistently high temperatures.

Weather Outlook for Delhi-NCR

According to the IMD’s bulletin released on April 17, 2026, Delhi is set to experience a short period of atmospheric instability, followed by a sustained rise in temperatures. For the evening and night of April 17, the IMD predicts a generally cloudy sky with light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h across the NCR.

As the week progresses, the forecast indicates a transition from this brief respite to hot and dry conditions. From April 18 to April 19, the city is expected to see partly cloudy skies, which will shift to predominantly clear skies from April 20 to April 23.

Maximum Temperature to Touch Above 42 Degrees

During this period, maximum temperatures are projected to range between 39°C and 42°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to settle between 20°C and 24°C. The IMD has classified these temperatures as “appreciably above normal” for this time of year. Although the department has not issued an official heatwave warning for the upcoming week, it has raised a moderate health concern for vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

To mitigate the effects of the heat, the IMD advises residents to avoid direct sun exposure, wear lightweight, light-colored cotton clothing, use head coverings such as hats or umbrellas, and maintain hydration by drinking water frequently.

Heatwave Forecast for Rajasthan: Temperatures Near 43 Degrees

The IMD has also indicated that most regions in Rajasthan are likely to experience primarily dry weather over the next three to four days, with a slight increase in temperatures and the potential for heatwave conditions in some areas. Maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius in the coming days, with isolated places in western Rajasthan possibly reaching between 41 and 43 degrees Celsius, which is 3-4 degrees above normal.

Heatwave Alert for Parts of Jharkhand

A heatwave alert has been issued for parts of Jharkhand on April 19 and 20, with maximum temperatures likely to increase by up to 3 degrees Celsius. Current temperatures across the state range from 33.5 to 41.8 degrees Celsius. Districts expected to experience heatwave conditions include Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar, West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan.

The deputy director at IMD Ranchi noted that the weather will remain dry, with maximum temperatures anticipated to rise by two to three notches. A ‘yellow’ alert for heatwave conditions has been issued for these districts.

Yellow Alert for Kerala

The IMD has also issued a ‘yellow alert’ for high temperatures across Kerala until April 19. This alert indicates moderate heatwave conditions and advises the public to exercise caution. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has reported that maximum temperatures are likely to reach around 40 degrees Celsius in isolated parts of Palakkad district, 39 degrees Celsius in Kollam, and 38 degrees Celsius in Kottayam.

Temperatures may also rise to approximately 37 degrees Celsius in Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, while Thiruvananthapuram may record around 36 degrees Celsius. The IMD has stated that temperatures are expected to remain 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal during this period.

Heatwave in Maharashtra

While some regions in northern India are experiencing relief due to western disturbances, parts of Maharashtra are already facing severe heat. Akola city in the Vidarbha region has recorded a maximum temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius. Other cities in the state, including Amravati (44°C), Wardha (43.9°C), and Nagpur (43.4°C), are among the highest in the country for maximum temperatures on that day.
