DoorDash acquires Instacart for $17 billion, enhancing grocery delivery capabilities

DoorDash has announced its acquisition of Instacart for $17 billion, a strategic move aimed at bolstering its grocery delivery capabilities. This acquisition will allow DoorDash to leverage Instacart’s established brand and extensive network, while also expanding its own grocery delivery services significantly. Instacart’s app and brand will remain intact, enabling its 600,000 independent shoppers to continue fulfilling orders as before, and grocers will have the option to partner with either platform.

Founded in 2012, Instacart specializes in grocery and convenience store deliveries across the U.S. and Canada, completing 338 million orders last year. The company has a market value of approximately $14 billion. In contrast, DoorDash, which began as a restaurant delivery service in 2013, has diversified its offerings to include pet food and electronics, operating in 40 countries with a market value of $73 billion.

Strategic Synergies and Market Dynamics

DoorDash’s entry into grocery delivery began in earnest during the pandemic, responding to a surge in demand. Initially cautious, major grocery chains like Kroger have since partnered with DoorDash, allowing it to deliver a broader range of products. Recently, DoorDash expanded its offerings to include delivery from Costco, further enhancing its grocery delivery portfolio.

According to Tony Xu, co-founder and CEO of DoorDash, the acquisition will merge Instacart’s grocery expertise with DoorDash’s logistics capabilities. “Grocery is one of the hardest things to get right online,” Xu stated, emphasizing the complexities involved in delivering fresh produce and other perishable items. He believes that this partnership will provide stores of all sizes with enhanced tools to optimize grocery delivery.

Competitive Landscape

The acquisition comes at a time when DoorDash has been steadily increasing its market share at the expense of Instacart. Five years ago, Instacart held 26% of the U.S. delivery market, but that figure has since dropped to 18%. Meanwhile, DoorDash’s share has risen from 44% to 59%, according to Consumer Edge, a market research firm. Uber Eats has maintained a steady share of just under 20% during this period.

Future Implications

While the acquisition is poised to enhance DoorDash’s grocery delivery capabilities, the implications for existing partnerships remain uncertain. For instance, Instacart currently facilitates deliveries from Walmart, but DoorDash ceased its Walmart delivery services in 2022. The future of such collaborations will be closely monitored as the integration progresses.

This acquisition marks a significant consolidation in the grocery delivery sector, reflecting the ongoing evolution of consumer preferences and the competitive dynamics of the market. As DoorDash integrates Instacart’s operations, the landscape of grocery delivery in North America is set for a transformative shift.
