Dropout’s ‘Game Changer’ Seeks Emmy Recognition After Building a Loyal Fandom on Creative Chaos
Indie streaming platform Dropout is making waves in the entertainment industry with its popular comedy panel game show, Game Changer. The show has garnered submissions in five Emmy categories, including Outstanding Game Show and Outstanding Host for Sam Reich. Reich attributes the show’s success to its Los Angeles roots, emphasizing that the location is integral to its identity.
A Commitment to Los Angeles
Reich, who also serves as the CEO of Dropout, expressed his strong connection to the city. He stated that he cannot envision Game Changer or Dropout existing outside of Los Angeles. The Eastside studio where many of their shows are filmed, including another Emmy contender, Very Important People, plays a crucial role in fostering a community of talent. He noted that relocating to places like Canada or Austin would fundamentally alter the show’s dynamics.
Despite his commitment to Los Angeles, Reich lamented the lack of support from the city in terms of tax incentives, stating, “They have not offered us a dime.”
Innovative Format and Production
Game Changer lives up to its name by changing its game format with each episode. Contestants, who are primarily stand-up comedians and improv actors selected by casting producer Jazzy Collins, enter the show without prior knowledge of the rules, adding an element of unpredictability. The show has completed seven seasons, with its eighth season premiering on May 18, and a ninth season already in the works.
Reich revealed that a satellite version of the writers’ room was established in February, with plans to shoot new episodes in October or November. The team has already compiled a shortlist of 15 ideas for future episodes.
Once filmed, each episode undergoes a rigorous six-month post-production process. Reich noted the increasing complexity of production, with episodes now utilizing over 20 cameras. Sam Geer serves as the lead editor and director, overseeing a team of editors who work on various episodes. Reich himself is heavily involved in the editing process, providing around 200 notes per episode and conducting multiple reviews.
Authenticity and Audience Engagement
The evolution of Game Changer since its debut in 2019 reflects a growing confidence while maintaining its original charm. Reich described Dropout’s productions as “criminally expensive by podcasting standards and criminally cheap by television standards.” He emphasized the importance of retaining a “rough-around-the-edges” quality that contributes to the show’s authenticity. The integration of crew members into the show, along with informal references to them, helps maintain a fourth-wall-breaking atmosphere.
The show has cultivated a dedicated online fan base, boasting 1.3 million followers on Instagram and over 15 million subscribers on Dropout’s YouTube channel, where it shares short clips from episodes. Dropout itself has surpassed 1 million subscribers who pay for full access to its content. Reich acknowledged that he never anticipated such a level of engagement when he first created the show.
Industry Recognition and Future Prospects
With a total of 11 Emmy submissions this year across Game Changer and Very Important People, the question arises whether the industry is ready to embrace the show’s unique blend of humor and creativity. Reich expressed that an Emmy nomination would serve as a significant validation for Dropout, potentially attracting a wider audience that may have been skeptical of the platform.
He noted, “We could be 10 times bigger than we are today and still be 10 times smaller than the biggest fish, so the ceiling is still incredibly far away.” Reich believes that recognition from the industry could open doors for new talent interested in collaborating with Dropout.
