Dubai Achieves First Crewed eVTOL Air Taxi Flight: Journey Time and Vertiport Details Unveiled
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, in a collaborative effort with Joby Aviation, announced the successful completion of the first crewed electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxi flight during the Dubai Airshow 2025. This landmark achievement highlights the rapid advancement of regulatory frameworks, infrastructure development, and test operations within the emirate.
This inaugural flight lasted 17 minutes, commencing from the Dubai Jetman Helipad located in Margham and concluding at Al Maktoum International Airport (Dubai World Central). With this flight, Joby Aviation becomes the first company globally to operate such a service within the UAE.
Vertiports in Dubai: A New Era of Transport
The RTA also revealed significant progress in developing Dubai’s first vertiport, facilitated by Skyports Infrastructure, a UK-based firm specialized in advanced aerial mobility projects. Construction of the vertiport is 60% complete, having reached its apex structure. This facility is poised to be the inaugural vertiport globally, situated near Dubai International Airport (DXB).
Further partnerships between RTA and major developers such as Emaar Properties and Wasl Asset Management will lead to the establishment of additional vertiports. New sites are slated for development at strategic locations, including the Zabeel Dubai Mall parking area, Palm Jumeirah near Atlantis The Royal, and Dubai Marina in the American University parking zone. The initial network plan includes four vertiports targeted for activation by 2026.
Future Mobility: A Vision for Smart Transport
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA Board, emphasized that the successful test flight aligns with the vision of the UAE’s leadership to position Dubai at the forefront of smart and sustainable mobility solutions. He stated, “The successful completion by Joby Aviation of the first aerial taxi flight between two distinct locations underscores the success of RTA’s operational framework for developing Dubai’s aerial mobility ecosystem.”
He reiterated that this foundational achievement fosters integration among smart mobility principles across the emirate. “It strengthens the confidence of global partners in our regulatory and technological environment,” he added. As progress continues on the DXB vertiport, along with agreements with key developers, RTA’s strategy to expand the aerial taxi network is well underway.
Fast, Convenient Travel: The Aerial Taxi Experience
The aerial taxi service marks a significant step toward achieving safer, more efficient, and sustainable transportation options. The projected travel time between Dubai International Airport and Palm Jumeirah is approximately 10 minutes, a considerable reduction from the roughly 45 minutes typically required by car.
Al Tayer highlighted the distinctive advantages of the aerial taxi, which aims to offer residents and visitors a rapid, secure, and convenient means of connecting between major Dubai destinations. “This initiative supports seamless multimodal travel and enhances citywide connectivity, ensuring a smooth and comfortable passenger experience,” he stated.
Aerial Mobility Ambitions: Setting Global Standards
JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, remarked on the significant strides made in establishing a sustainable aerial transport infrastructure. “From flight demonstrations to infrastructure, we’re making incredible progress on all fronts as we look ahead to launching commercial passenger service in Dubai next year,” he noted.
Skyports’ CEO Duncan Walker underscored the importance of vertiports in successful advanced aerial mobility. He stated, “With this pivotal milestone reached, we are witnessing a historic moment as Dubai positions itself to become the first city globally to realize advanced aerial mobility.”
Joby’s eVTOL Aircraft: Details and Specifications
Joby’s electric air taxi is optimized for urban settings, featuring vertical take-off and landing capabilities, a six-rotor system, and four battery packs, all while maintaining zero operational emissions. The air taxi has a maximum range of 160 kilometers and can reach speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour. Designed to accommodate four passengers plus a pilot, continuous flight testing is being conducted in cooperation with the RTA, along with the relevant aviation authority bodies.
The primary vertiport near DXB occupies 3,100 square meters across four floors. It is equipped with take-off pads, charging zones, parking areas, and air-conditioned passenger facilities, planned to handle around 42,000 landings per year, servicing approximately 170,000 passengers annually. All vertiports adhere to stringent international safety standards, handled by Skyports, while the RTA oversees governance and integration with existing transport systems.
2026 Launch Plan: The Future of Urban Air Transport
The RTA’s initiative for aerial taxis follows an agreement made in 2024 involving multiple stakeholders, including aviation authorities. Under this partnership, Dubai is set to pioneer urban aerial transport through a network of eVTOL air taxis. The commercial operations are anticipated to commence in 2026, marking a new era in urban transportation.
