Dubai Cuts Road Delays from 12 Minutes to 90 Seconds with $354 Million Upgrade
Transforming Dubai’s Transportation Landscape
Dubai has embarked on a significant transformation of its road and transport network, driven by a new architectural identity endorsed by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This initiative is set to enhance mobility, redefine the city’s visual character, and significantly reduce travel times across essential corridors.
The Crown Prince of Dubai, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, emphasized the importance of this architectural framework, aiming to enrich the urban landscape of Dubai’s roads and streets in alignment with the city’s vision to evolve into an integrated and sustainable global metropolis.
Major Infrastructure Projects Under Review
During a recent review of various infrastructure projects, Sheikh Hamdan evaluated the AED1.3 billion ($354 million) Trade Centre Roundabout and Al Mustaqbal Street improvement projects. These developments include the construction of seven bridges and three tunnels, spanning a total of 6.5 kilometers, strategically positioned to serve critical areas.
Targeting seven key residential and development zones—including the Dubai World Trade Centre and Downtown Dubai—these projects are projected to benefit over one million residents and tourists while reducing travel times by 75 percent.
The Dubai Tunnels Initiative
In addition to the roundabout improvements, the Dubai Tunnels initiative aims to transform essential infrastructure into cultural landmarks. This initiative will feature artistic murals created in partnership with local artists, further enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Dubai’s transport network.
The Director-General of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Mattar Al Tayer, welcomed Sheikh Hamdan, providing insights into the vast network of 25,000 lane kilometers that facilitates over 3.5 million vehicles daily. This recognition reflects Dubai’s global standing in the rapid and efficient development of transport infrastructure.
RTA’s Ambitious Strategy
The RTA claims to construct an average of 829 lane-kilometers each year, substantially exceeding the global average of around 400. The authority has also achieved cost efficiencies ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 times greater than major global cities like Moscow and Milan.
Roadway enhancements have been linked to increased property values, which have risen by 6 to 16 percent. Between 2025 and 2027, the RTA plans to roll out 72 new projects at a projected cost of AED35 billion ($9.53 billion). Progress is evident in the Trade Centre Roundabout Improvement Project, which has reached 40 percent completion.
Enhancing Connectivity with Bridges and Tunnels
The pivotal Trade Centre Roundabout connects Sheikh Zayed Road to five major arterial routes, including Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street and Zabeel Palace Street. The phased opening of the project is set to begin in January, starting with two bridges that will facilitate traffic from 2nd December Street.
A crucial aspect of the infrastructure enhancement includes a second bridge linking Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, which is slated to open in March. This will be followed by two additional bridges in October 2026.
The overall project consists of five bridges totaling 5 kilometers and will convert the existing roundabout into a surface-level intersection. This redesign aims to double the junction’s capacity, reducing average delays from 12 minutes to just 90 seconds and cutting down travel time from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street from six minutes to one.
Al Mustaqbal Street Improvement Project
Sheikh Hamdan also reviewed the Al Mustaqbal Street Improvement Project, which stretches from Zabeel Palace Street to Financial Centre Street and is scheduled for completion in 2027. This project incorporates bridges and tunnels totaling 1,500 meters and will widen the corridor from three to four lanes in each direction.
The expected capacity increase is 33 percent, allowing for an uptick from 6,600 to 8,800 vehicles per hour, while slashing travel times from 13 minutes to just six.
Focus on Improved Traffic Flow
The Al Mustaqbal Street project includes the construction of three tunnels, totaling 1,100 meters, at the intersection of Al Mustaqbal Street and Trade Centre Street. Additionally, the project will feature a new two-lane bridge spanning 400 meters to improve access to the Dubai World Trade Centre and various widening works across 3,500 kilometers.
Upgrades will include free-flow connections at Exhibition Street and Trade Centre Street, a new pedestrian bridge on Sukuk Street, and improvements along existing junctions in the corridor.
A Unified Architectural Identity
Sheikh Hamdan reviewed the newly developed architectural identity aligned with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. This identity is intended to unify the aesthetics of the city’s infrastructure while promoting sustainability and innovation.
The architectural identity will apply to various urban elements, such as bridges, street furniture, and lighting, ensuring functional and visual harmony across the city. Dubai has been classified into six distinct zones, catering to residential, historical, industrial, and artistic needs, each with specific materials and colors that reflect the emirate’s diverse character.
Bridging Global Talent with Local Heritage
In addition to infrastructure improvements, Sheikh Hamdan reviewed the Dubai Urban Challenge, a global competition that attracted over 500 artists and designers from 91 countries. This initiative encourages the blending of local heritage with global creativity, a philosophy that finds expression in entertainment and engaging urban spaces.
Winners of the challenge include talents from the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in urban innovation.
The review concluded with a final look at the Dubai Tunnels initiative, aimed at beautifying 18 tunnels through innovative lighting, artistic wall panels, and sustainable materials. This initiative is designed to reinforce Dubai’s leadership as a global hub for advanced infrastructure design.
