Dubai Launches Aerial Taxis, Expands Metro, and Introduces Future Loop in Transport Master Plan
Dubai is set to enter a new era of urban mobility with a series of ambitious transport infrastructure projects that include the introduction of aerial taxis, an extensive expansion of the Metro network, and the innovative Future Loop pedestrian system. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity while fostering sustainable urban development across the city.
Dubai’s Vision for Future Transport
The Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, recently oversaw a meeting outlining these transformative projects with the Director General of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). During the session, Sheikh Hamdan emphasized that “Dubai’s continued investment in infrastructure represents an investment in its people and future,” echoing the broader vision set forth by the UAE leadership.
These projects belong to a forward-thinking strategy designed to create a connected and sustainable metropolis characterized by innovation and efficiency, aligning closely with the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33. The Crown Prince noted that Dubai’s approach to urban development is rooted in long-term planning and technology integration, establishing new standards for smart and resilient city design.
Aerial Taxis to Launch Passenger Transport in 2026
A significant highlight of the new transport framework is the forthcoming launch of aerial taxis, with initial passenger services expected to commence in 2026. The RTA has made substantial progress, with operational trials underway conducted by Joby Aviation Inc. Recent milestones include the successful first crewed flight of an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which took off from Margham and landed at Al Maktoum International Airport.
This technological advancement aligns with a timeline geared toward making aerial taxis a viable transport option. The electric aircraft boasts six propellers, four independent battery packs, a flight range of 160 kilometers, and can reach speeds of 320 kilometers per hour. It accommodates four passengers in addition to the pilot, combining speed, safety, and environmental sustainability in its design.
Vertiports: Preparing Dubai’s Aerial Mobility Infrastructure
As part of the aerial taxi initiative, the RTA is also advancing the construction of vertiports, specialized facilities essential for aerial mobility. The first of these sites, developed by Skyports Infrastructure, is strategically located near Dubai International Airport. Spanning 3,100 square meters across four levels, the facility will feature two parking floors, two take-off and landing pads, and air-conditioned passenger areas.
In addition, there are ongoing efforts to collaborate with property developers to integrate further vertiports within new urban developments, enhancing overall transport connectivity.
Metro Network to Expand to 131 KM by 2029
In tandem with the aerial taxi system, Sheikh Hamdan was briefed on plans to expand the Dubai Metro network from its current length of 101 kilometers to a comprehensive 131 kilometers by 2029. This expansion will include the development of the Blue Line, which will comprise 120 kilometers of metro lines and 11 kilometers of tram services.
This significant infrastructure development will increase the total number of stations from 64 to 78, adding 67 Metro stations and 11 Tram stations. Furthermore, the fleet of trains is set to grow from 140 to 168, thereby enhancing the efficiency and reach of Dubai’s public transport system.
Enhancing Connectivity with New Roads and Projects
The RTA has outlined an expansive strategy aimed at further integrating Dubai’s transport network. This initiative includes 72 new projects scheduled for completion by 2027, involving the construction of 226 kilometers of new roads, alongside 115 bridges and tunnels distributed across critical development zones.
This development plan will also focus on establishing 11 major corridors designed to bolster connectivity and improve traffic flow throughout the emirate.
The Future Loop: A Pedestrian-First Urban Vision
In a bid to foster pedestrian mobility, the Future Loop project forms part of the comprehensive Dubai Walk Master Plan. The objective is to create a pedestrian-friendly environment throughout the year by developing 3,300 kilometers of new walkways and rehabilitating 2,300 kilometers of existing paths by 2040. An additional 900 kilometers of routes are planned for the years beyond 2040.
A defining feature of the Future Loop is a striking 2-kilometer-long bridge connecting key economic and business landmarks, including the Dubai World Trade Centre and the Museum of the Future. This bridge will feature a climate-controlled upper level that spans 30,000 square meters and will be complemented by 30,000 square meters of shaded outdoor areas aimed at enhancing comfort and walkability.
