Dubai Metro Expands with Blue and Gold Lines: Key Routes and Stations Transforming Commuting in 2029 and 2032
Dubai’s Metro network is set for a significant expansion with the introduction of the Blue and Gold Lines, enhancing public transport options for residents and visitors alike. The Blue Line is scheduled to open on September 9, 2029, while the Gold Line is expected to commence operations on September 9, 2032. This expansion aligns with the 2040 Dubai Urban Master Plan, which aims to create a ’20-minute city’ where essential services are within a short distance for most residents.
Overview of the Dubai Metro
Since its inception in 2009, the Dubai Metro has successfully transported over 2.8 billion passengers, providing efficient and reliable transit across the city. Currently, the network includes two main lines—the Red and Green Lines—spanning nearly 90 kilometers. The upcoming Blue Line will introduce new routes and stations, including the world’s tallest Metro station, while the Gold Line will further extend the network by 25%.
Dubai Metro Blue Line
Construction of the Blue Line began in 2022, representing a substantial investment of Dh56 billion in the city’s transport infrastructure. The line will cover 30 kilometers and feature 14 stations, with approximately 15.5 kilometers underground and 14.5 kilometers above ground. This new line is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion in Dubai by 20% and will connect the existing Red and Green Lines.
Routes and Area Coverage
The Blue Line will be divided into two main routes:
- First Route: This route will cover 21 kilometers and include 10 stations. It will start at the Al Khor Interchange Station on the Green Line, passing through Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Ras Al Khor, before reaching International City 1. An underground interchange station at this stop will allow access to International City 2 and 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Academic City, terminating at Al Ruwaiyah 3 Depot.
- Second Route: Covering 9 kilometers, this route will have four stations, beginning at the Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line. It will traverse Mirdif and Al Warqa, concluding at the International City 1 underground interchange station, linking it to the first route.
The Blue Line will connect nine key areas, including:
- Dubai International Airport
- Mirdif
- Al Warqa
- International City 1 and 2
- Dubai Silicon Oasis
- Academic City
- Ras Al Khor Industrial Area
- Dubai Creek Harbour
- Dubai Festival City
Facilities and Key Features
The Blue Line will feature nine elevated and five underground stations, along with three major interchange stations. The design of the elevated stations is inspired by seashells, while the interiors will reflect thematic elements of earth, water, fire, air, and heritage.
Notable features of the Blue Line include:
- First Metro Bridge over Dubai Creek: This 1.3-kilometer bridge will connect Al Jaddaf to Dubai Creek Harbour, offering scenic views.
- Largest Underground Interchange Station: The International City 1 station will span 44,000 square meters and is expected to accommodate 350,000 passengers daily.
- World’s Tallest Metro Station: Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, this station will rise to 74 meters and is expected to handle up to 160,000 passengers daily.
Dubai Metro Gold Line
On April 22, 2023, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the Dh34 billion Gold Line project, which aims to serve 1.5 million residents. The Gold Line will extend the Dubai Metro network by 25%, connecting to existing lines and Etihad Rail. The anticipated daily ridership is projected to reach 465,000 passengers by 2040.
Routes and Area Coverage
The Gold Line will be the first fully integrated underground Metro route in Dubai, stretching 42 kilometers and enhancing connectivity to 55 major real estate developments currently under construction. It will include 18 stations covering 15 strategic areas, starting from Al Ghubaiba and ending at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
Four interchange stations will be established at:
