Dubai Plans to Triple Sports Participation to 2.6 Million by 2033
Comprehensive Strategy to Boost Community Engagement
Dubai is set to enhance its status as a global sports hub with a bold new initiative aimed at significantly increasing the number of residents actively involved in sports. The ambitious plan, launched by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, aims to raise participation levels to 2.6 million by the year 2033.
The newly unveiled Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033 emphasizes a long-term vision for the emirate, focusing on community participation, major sporting events, and the development of local talent. This plan intends not only to propel Dubai into the ranks of leading sports destinations but also to improve the overall quality of life for its inhabitants.
Pillars of the Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan
The framework of this strategic plan is built around four essential pillars:
- Community
- Events
- Clubs
- Talent
These pillars represent the focus of efforts to cultivate a rich and sustainable sports ecosystem throughout the emirate.
Enhancing Community Well-Being
Khalfan Jumaa Belhoul, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, articulated the plan’s goals, stating, “This Plan aims to enhance community well-being and overall quality of life.” He highlighted the intention for Dubai to be recognized as the most active and sport-friendly city globally.
Key to this initiative are three primary community programs aimed at diversifying sports activities for all demographics. These programs will cater to everyone from senior citizens to organizations focused on People of Determination, enriching their social engagement through sports.
Focus on Women, Youth, and Community Sports
Significant attention will be directed toward women’s participation, youth activities, and the development of school sports programs. Thirteen community initiatives will be launched, including the expanded Sheikha Hind Women’s Sports Initiative and the new ‘Dubai District Games.’
The Sheikha Hind Women’s Sports Initiative aims to evolve into a year-round program that will feature championships and health campaigns, targeting over 200,000 female participants within the next two years. This initiative will kick off with the inaugural World Triathlon Women’s Cup on December 7, paving the way for a dynamic series of sports competitions tailored for diverse nationalities and age groups.
Additionally, the plan anticipates boosting student participation in school sports to 70,000 annually, a substantial increase facilitated by an expanded School Games Program. This program will introduce 26 sports competitions held over 107 days, with designated tournaments expected to attract around 25,000 participants.
Introducing the Dubai District Games
The “Dubai District Games” stand out as a flagship initiative promoting healthy living and community involvement through competitive tournaments in several sports, including:
- Football
- 3×3 Basketball
- Volleyball
- Badminton
Scheduled from December 4 to 19, this event will see participation from over 3,800 individuals aged 18 and above, culminating in finals set for December 17–19 at a central venue to be announced. Teams will represent their respective residential districts, competing across eight zones that cover the entire emirate.
Detailed Competition Framework
The competitions will be organized in two phases: initial zone-level matches will determine the top three teams from each zone, followed by city-wide finals where qualifiers will vie for the title of “Dubai Champions.” Each of these matches will take place in top-tier facilities to provide athletes and spectators with a professional sports experience.
Sports Accessibility for All
The Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan also emphasizes creating year-round youth sports centers, annual activities tailored for People of Determination, and sports competitions for labor communities across ten venues and twelve sports.
An innovative approach to sports urban planning is a focal point, ensuring that new community developments incorporate sports facilities while upgrading existing areas for equitable access. The Dubai Sports Council is collaborating with various municipal and transport authorities to integrate sports spaces into future urban development projects.
Conclusion
The Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033 sets a clear trajectory for the emirate, aiming for an unprecedented increase in sports participatory levels. By fostering engagement across all segments of society, Dubai is positioning itself not just as a destination for sporting events but as a thriving community enriched by health, wellness, and active lifestyles.
