Dubai Reveals Bold Vision for Sports Industry Future

Comprehensive Sports Strategy Unveiled

A new and ambitious Dubai Sports Strategic Plan 2033 was recently launched by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed, chairman of the Dubai Sports Council. The plan outlines an extensive vision aimed at transforming the emirate’s sports landscape, focusing on growth and innovation within the industry.

Four Key Pillars of Development

The strategy revolves around four main pillars: enhancing support for both private and public sports clubs, fostering talent development, increasing community engagement, and broadening the events calendar. These pillars are designed to strengthen Dubai’s position as a leading international sports hub.

Economic Aspirations and Goals

With aspirations to unlock the economic potential of the sports sector, the initiative aims to boost the industry’s contribution to Dubai’s GDP from Dh10.1 billion to Dh18.3 billion ($2.9 billion to $4.6 billion) annually by 2033. “We have launched a comprehensive and forward-looking vision for the future of sport in Dubai,” said Sheikh Mansoor, emphasizing the plan’s focus on competitiveness and global reputation.

Empowering Club Structures

The strategy seeks to empower sports clubs in Dubai, particularly private entities, to achieve sustainable revenue and global success. His Excellency Khalfan Juma Belhoul, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, discussed the council’s role in nurturing growth among clubs, stating, “Our relationship with clubs continues to take them from strength to strength.”

Focus on Sustainable Revenue

Belhoul highlighted that achieving a 50% sustainability in commercial revenue through clubs’ core business operations is crucial by 2033. “Sustainable clubs is not an easy thing to do,” he noted, reinforcing the commitment to closely collaborating with clubs for attaining this goal.

Talent Development Initiatives

Identifying and nurturing athletic talent forms a cornerstone of the strategic plan, which aims to support 1,400 athletes annually. Belhoul stressed the importance of a supportive ecosystem: “Every ecosystem needs talent development, linked to events, community, and clubs as a whole; facilities, infrastructure, and stipends are vital for students.”

Activating Community Participation

A major element of the strategy is aimed at increasing sports participation at the community level. Initiatives, such as Sheikha Hind’s program, will expand its reach year-round, targeting over 200,000 women. The overall ambition is to boost the number of active residents from 1.6 million to 2.6 million by 2033.

Prioritizing Sports Categories

The plan identifies 17 key sports across three categories: emerging sports like padel and esports, community sports such as running and swimming, and globally popular sports including golf, cricket, and basketball. This diverse focus aims to promote public health and enhance community engagement.

Expanding the Events Calendar

In a bid to enhance Dubai’s appeal as a world-class destination for sports, the strategy aims to double the major events hosted in the city and raise annual attendance from 1.67 million to 4.1 million. Belhoul articulated the vision for future events: “How can we invest wisely in global events while uplifting local ones?”

Attracting Global Attention

The ambition is clear, with a target of having over 4 million attendees at major events by 2033. “The ultimate vision: we want Dubai, with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor, to be the world’s best sporting city, God willing,” said Belhoul, underscoring the city’s commitment to achieving this goal.
