Dubai Emerges as a Sports Hub
Following a missed opportunity for the UAE’s second World Cup appearance, the global sports community is converging on Dubai as the year comes to a close. The UAE previously participated in the 1990 World Cup in Italy but was edged out in recent qualifiers by Qatar. The Gulf emirate is hosting the Globe Soccer football summit, which showcases the region’s growing influence in the world of sports.
During the summit, Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the title of Middle East Player of the Year. The Portuguese national team captain has been playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia since 2022 and is a frequent visitor to sports events in Dubai. He owns a luxury villa on Jumeirah Bay Island, a location known as «Billionaire Island.»
FIFA Awards Set for 2026 in Dubai
At the World Sports Summit 2025, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that the FIFA World Football Awards will be permanently held in Dubai starting in 2026. Previously known as the «The Best Awards,» the ceremony recognized the most influential figures in football.
“These World Football Awards will not just be an awards ceremony but an innovative way to celebrate football and to honor the official top performers of the year both on and off the pitch,” Infantino stated. The FIFA President has shown a strong affinity for the Arab world and recently accepted Lebanese citizenship as a gesture of goodwill, further solidifying his ties to the region.
The upcoming World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, will feature six Arab teams: Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt. Infantino expressed enthusiasm over the scale of the event, stating, “Forty-eight teams are taking part, from 48 countries—that’s a quarter of the world.”
Dubai’s Allure for Sporting Stars
Renowned athletes are increasingly making Dubai their home. Sports legends like Roger Federer and Kristina Mladenovic are residing in the city, while icons such as Lionel Messi and David Beckham are reportedly investing in local real estate. Ons Jabeur, the top Arab tennis player, has established a tennis academy named after her in Dubai Academic City.
The city’s appeal is bolstered by continuous tax exemptions, high levels of security, a globally connected airport, and nearly year-round pleasant weather. During winter, advertisements highlight the Mediterranean-like daytime temperatures, making it an attractive destination for both living and training.
In early 2025, former footballer Mamadou Sakho launched Sakho & Co, a luxury real estate and interior design firm in Dubai, thereby transitioning his post-retirement career into the booming local market. Such investments not only enhance the city’s profile but also yield significant global exposure.
Bayern Munich’s Training Plans Shift
However, not all news from the Gulf region has been positive. FC Bayern Munich will be forgoing its traditional winter training camp in Dubai due to scheduling conflicts. In previous years, fans capitalized on the team’s January training in Doha, Qatar, combining it with a vacation.
Despite an offer from Emirates, the state airline of Dubai, to arrange a flight, Bayern’s management clarified that the tight season schedule ahead of the World Cup prevents a trip shortly before the second half of the Bundesliga season begins on January 9. Head coach Vincent Kompany will lead the team, including star striker Harry Kane and captain Manuel Neuer, in a home training session, followed by a friendly match against FC Red Bull Salzburg on January 6.
As the landscape of sports continues to evolve, Dubai remains a focal point for athletes, organizers, and fans alike, further establishing itself as a premier destination in the global sports arena.
