Inaugural World Sports Summit Gathers Industry Prominents
Dubai recently hosted its inaugural World Sports Summit, attracting over 1,500 figures from the global sports industry for two days of discourse on critical topics such as athlete welfare and the future of international competition. The event took place at Madinat Jumeirah, featuring around 70 prominent speakers, including both active and retired athletes, sports administrators, and federation leaders.
Organized by the Dubai Sports Council under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the summit focused on the overarching theme of “Uniting the World Through Sport.” This initiative underscores Dubai’s commitment to becoming a global hub for sports dialogue and development.
Significant Voices Share Insights
Among the distinguished speakers was Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk, who shared his views on the motivational power of sports during challenging times. “Now, it’s very important because a lot of Ukrainian people, soldiers, children… it’s important because you win; it motivates people. People believe it’s true. It’s possible,” Usyk stated.
Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao also attended, offering his insights into the qualities that lead to success. “Believe in God, believe in yourself and hard work, focus, and you will achieve all that you are dreaming for,” Pacquiao said. He encouraged attendees to aspire to create a legacy that inspires future generations.
Addressing Elite Athletes’ Challenges
Discussions throughout the summit highlighted the pressures faced by elite athletes, including psychological stress and public scrutiny. Khalfan Belhoul, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, remarked, “Many people might not really assess how important this is… The level of validation and comfort they had that we have really opened up to discuss these points was amazing to hear.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino delivered a keynote speech on the opening day, titled “The Next 90 Minutes.” He emphasized the gathering’s significance, stating, “It’s a beautiful event here in Dubai, bringing together the best of the best in the sports world.” Infantino noted the important role that athletes play in inspiring passion across various sports.
A Convergence of Sports Icons
Day one of the summit featured discussions with notable figures such as tennis star Novak Djokovic, alongside boxers Pacquiao and Usyk, and Brazilian football icon Ronaldo Nazário. Conversations also spotlighted industry leaders like Paris Saint-Germain’s President Nasser Al Khelaifi, who spoke in dialogue with former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch.
On day two, the sessions included insights from mixed martial arts fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, Italian football legends Roberto Baggio and Alessandro Del Piero, and former NBA players now working as sports executives. Topics ranged from fan engagement strategies to the development of women’s sports and the impact of artificial intelligence in athletics.
Honoring Sports Excellence
The summit also featured the 13th Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Sports Award ceremony, which celebrated outstanding sports figures from the UAE, the Arab region, and beyond. Sheikh bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum highlighted the significance of the summit in uniting prominent decision-makers from sports organizations and international federations.
This event aligns with Dubai’s Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033, aimed at doubling the sports sector’s economic contribution to 18.3 billion dirhams (€4.25 billion). Dubai’s substantial investment in sports infrastructure positions it as a leading host for international competitions across various sporting disciplines.
