Dubai Transformation: Russian Expat Dasha Kulik Reinvents Career and Community After Arriving with Just a Suitcase
Dasha Kulik, a Russian expat, reflects on her transformative journey in Dubai, where she found the confidence to reshape her career and build a vibrant community. Arriving in July 2022 with just a suitcase, Kulik faced overwhelming challenges, including the cost of living and adapting to a new environment.
Four years ago, upon entering a café in Dubai, Kulik was moved to tears when she glanced at the menu. Having just left her job in Russia, the thought of affording even a simple cup of coffee felt daunting. She expressed her concerns to her husband, unsure of how they would manage their new life.
Today, returning to that same café feels entirely normal for Kulik. It symbolizes her significant growth since relocating. She noted, “Sometimes, growth looks like major achievements. And sometimes, it looks like no longer checking the price of lunch.”
From Hotel Rooms to Finding a Home
Kulik’s initial experience in Dubai was not without its difficulties. After her husband secured a job offer, she began working remotely for a client in Cyprus. This led to a year spent largely indoors, moving between hotels while searching for a suitable home. Without a car initially, they relied on taxis for transportation.
Eventually, they settled in a newer community in Dubai. While their apartment met their expectations, the area was initially sparse. Over the past three years, Kulik has witnessed the rapid development of her neighborhood, which now boasts numerous amenities. She remarked, “I honestly feel like it’s the best place to live in Dubai.”
A Career She Never Imagined
During her time in Dubai, Kulik received an unexpected job offer as the Creative Producer at the Theatre of Digital Art (ToDA) in Souk Madinat Jumeirah. This opportunity opened doors to an industry she had never considered. Previously involved in advertising, community management, and artist management, her new role introduced her to event production, collaborating with international clients, government entities, artists, and sound engineers.
Kulik acknowledged the improbability of such a career path in Russia, stating, “I would never have imagined doing that in Russia, but here I am doing it.” This job marked a pivotal moment for both her and her husband. Following her employment, he found a better job opportunity after being laid off, which Kulik attributes to the unique possibilities available in Dubai.
How Dubai Changed an Introvert
Kulik views the UAE as a land of opportunities, noting that both she and her friends have achieved things in Dubai that may not have been possible elsewhere. She highlighted the ease of networking and connecting with the right people, which she believes is unparalleled.
The city has also encouraged her to embrace a more outgoing side. “Because of all the opportunities that are available here, I became super brave. I became someone who was more open to meeting people,” she explained. Kulik now actively seeks out new initiatives, confident that the country welcomes innovation.
Her newfound confidence led to what she considers her proudest achievement: co-founding the UAE’s first independent symphonic orchestra. Together with two partners, she brought together around 50 musicians without relying on sponsorship or fundraising. “When I tell my friends and family back home, they are genuinely surprised. We collected an orchestra without sponsors or any funding, which is unbelievable in other countries,” she stated.
The Impact of Diversity
Beyond career advancements, Kulik is profoundly impressed by the diversity in the UAE. She appreciates the coexistence of various nationalities, ethnicities, religions, and languages, stating, “What I like is that there are people from all possible nationalities here, all ethnicities, religions, and languages, and everybody coexists with each other beautifully.”
Reflecting on her journey, Kulik cannot envision building a life anywhere else. Four years after arriving in Dubai, she feels a deep sense of belonging. “I definitely want to stay here. Even during the events that happened a few months ago, I always felt like it was the safest country in the world,” she said. She remains optimistic about the future, confident in the UAE’s ambitious plans.
Kulik continues to enjoy that cup of coffee from the café that once brought her to tears, a testament to her remarkable journey.
