Dubai Unveils 595 New Bus Shelters in RTA’s Citywide Upgrade Completion
Major Progress in Public Transportation Infrastructure
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed the installation of 595 new public bus shelters across key districts in the emirate. This initiative forms part of a larger program to erect a total of 762 shelters, aimed at enhancing the quality of public transport facilities within Dubai.
The project is now 89 percent complete and is designed to support the emirate’s long-term urban mobility goals. The new bus shelters not only aim to elevate the standard of public transport but also reflect a modern aesthetic that aligns with Dubai’s urban landscape.
Enhancing Commuter Experience
The newly introduced bus shelters feature a range of amenities intended to improve the daily commute for both residents and visitors. According to RTA officials, these shelters will be critical for several heavily frequented routes, including those that handle more than ten bus lines. The RTA emphasizes the significant role the bus network plays, servicing over 192 million passengers annually.
RTA’s Vision for Integrated Urban Mobility
Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, described the upgraded facilities as a significant milestone in enhancing the urban environment in Dubai. “The new shelters represent a pivotal step in RTA’s efforts to develop an integrated urban environment that encourages residents and visitors to use public transport, improves quality of life, and promotes comfort and well-being,” he stated.
The RTA’s commitment to providing modern, comfortable, and safe facilities is clear. These enhancements are aligned with the goal of boosting the appeal of the bus network amid Dubai’s growing population and urban expansion.
Commitment to Sustainability and Network Efficiency
Al Tayer pointed out that the new shelters combine modern design with essential services to ensure a better mobility experience. This initiative aims to fortify public confidence in the public transport network while also supporting sustainability objectives, including emissions reduction.
“The shelters serve many bus routes, and some accommodate more than ten routes per shelter,” he added. This design approach not only enhances network efficiency but also serves to reduce travel times for commuters, thereby increasing the reliance on public transport.
Strategic Location Selection
The locations for these new bus shelters have been carefully chosen to support high-density urban areas and meet both current and future operational needs of the public bus network. The RTA aims to ensure that these facilities integrate seamlessly with various transport options, including cycling and pedestrian routes, promoting a holistic mobility framework for the city.
Ongoing Development and Future Enhancements
Work is actively continuing on the remaining bus shelters, expected to further enhance Dubai’s public transport landscape. These improvements come as the city prepares for sustained growth in passenger numbers, responding to the needs of its expanding population.
As the RTA progresses in its plans, the focus remains on fostering a comprehensive and efficient public transport system that meets the demands of both residents and visitors. The new bus shelters are a testament to Dubai’s commitment to evolving its urban infrastructure for improved accessibility and convenience.
