Dubai Unveils AED 20 Billion Blue Line Metro Project, Set to Serve One Million Residents by 2029
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has officially launched the tunnelling works for the Dubai Metro Blue Line project. This ambitious initiative represents an investment exceeding AED 20.5 billion and aims to enhance the city’s public transport infrastructure significantly.
The Blue Line will span 30 kilometers, featuring a 15.5-kilometer underground section and a 14.5-kilometer above-ground stretch. It will include 14 stations—three of which will be interchange stations—along with seven elevated and four underground stations. This new line is designed to serve nine key districts, accommodating a projected population of around one million as outlined in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
Key Milestone
During the launch event, His Highness emphasized the importance of investing in the transport sector as a crucial element for enhancing Dubai’s global competitiveness. He noted that the Dubai Metro Blue Line aligns with an integrated vision to create a more connected, efficient, and sustainable urban environment.
His Highness stated that projects in Dubai are executed to meet the highest international standards, guided by clear plans and timelines. He highlighted that 180 railway experts and engineers are overseeing the project’s delivery.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai; His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai; and other senior officials.
Anticipating the Future
The launch of tunnelling works from the largest underground interchange station in the metro network, covering over 44,000 square meters, showcases Dubai’s commitment to a smart mobility system. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life, facilitate business growth, and connect communities within an integrated urban framework.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed was briefed on the project’s progress at the International City 1 Station site by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The project is currently 20% complete, with over 10,000 workers and 500 engineers engaged under Emirati leadership.
Accelerated Execution
The consortium responsible for the Blue Line project has completed more than 13 million work hours without any lost-time injuries. Construction at the stations is advancing rapidly, surpassing planned completion rates. Ongoing bridge works include the construction of the first metro bridge over Dubai Creek, which will extend 1.3 kilometers.
Completion is projected to reach 30% by the end of 2026, with the line set to open on September 9, 2029. The combined Dubai Metro and Tram network now extends 101 kilometers and comprises 140 trains, having served nearly 2.8 billion commuters since its inception in 2009.
Station Designs Showcased
His Highness reviewed the architectural designs for the International City 1 interchange station, which will be the largest underground station in the network, capable of accommodating 350,000 riders per day.
Additionally, he examined the interior designs for the Emaar Properties Station, which will be the world’s tallest metro station at 74 meters. This station is designed to evoke luxury and a sense of belonging, featuring soaring walls and natural textures.
Inspired by Nature
The remaining stations will showcase contemporary designs inspired by the four elements:
- Air: Three stations symbolizing ambition and ascent through open spaces and light.
- Water: Two stations reflecting maritime history with flowing forms and calm colors.
- Earth: Four stations using earthy tones to convey authenticity and stability.
- Fire: Two stations representing dynamic energy through vibrant colors and a sense of speed.
Three-Pronged Tunnelling Works
His Highness initiated the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) named ‘Al Wugeisha,’ which will proceed in three directions from International City 1 Station: toward Mirdif, the Auto Market, and Al Warsan. The TBM is 163 meters long, weighs over 2,000 tonnes, and advances 13 to 17 meters per day, equipped with high-precision digital guidance systems.
Boost for Knowledge and Tech Economy
The Blue Line will connect with the Green Line at Creek Station and the Red Line at Centrepoint Station. It will serve Dubai Silicon Oasis, a hub for innovation, providing 20-minute journeys to Dubai International Airport and reducing traffic congestion by 20% along its corridors.
Iconic Design and Proactive Planning
The Emaar Properties Station, designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will accommodate 160,000 riders per day. To ensure quality and efficiency, the RTA has established dedicated ready-mix concrete plants and precast factories specifically for the Blue Line, enhancing supply chains and reducing implementation timelines.
