Introduction to Dubai’s Expanding Aviation Network
Dubai Airports is entering the winter travel season with one of the most extensive and resilient aviation networks in its history. Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central–Al Maktoum International (DWC) are set to welcome new airlines, broaden routes, and increase capacity to cater to the seasonal demand.
Direct Traffic Dominates Winter Performance
Direct traffic has become a defining feature of DXB’s winter performance, accounting for 55 percent of the total passenger demand. This rise reflects a seasonal trend, influenced by Dubai’s cooler climate and a bustling calendar filled with international business, sports, and entertainment events. Additionally, the increase in travel by residents visiting family or taking holidays further supports this trend. The growth is also impacted by a steady influx of individuals making Dubai their long- or medium-term home.
Growth from Europe and Central Asia
Air travel from Europe and Central Asia is showing notable growth for this winter season. Several airlines are either expanding their services or returning to the market. For instance, FlyArystan has joined DXB’s network, offering twice-weekly flights from Aktau in Kazakhstan starting November 29. Austrian Airlines resumed operations on December 2, providing five weekly services from Vienna. Airline responses to sustained travel demand are evident, with European carriers continuously increasing their flight capacities.
Virgin Atlantic has upgraded its Dubai route using A350-1000 aircraft, which boosts its seat capacity by 52 percent. Meanwhile, British Airways has resumed its A380 services from London Heathrow. These initiative signal strong confidence from European markets as the festive season approaches.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
Demand from South Asia and the broader Middle East is bolstering DXB’s connectivity. On October 30, Varesh Airline initiated twice-weekly flights from Sari in Iran, while Fly Jinnah added similar services from Lahore on November 2. These new routes are designed to enhance point-to-point travel from regional markets where winter demand typically peaks.
Saudi Arabia continues to be a significant contributor to traffic growth. As of October, it ranks as DXB’s second-largest country market, accounting for 7.8 percent of total passengers. In total, combined passenger traffic from Saudi Arabia at DXB and DWC reached 6.3 million, reflecting a 1.3 percent increase year-on-year.
The Role of Dubai World Central
DWC is increasingly becoming a vital component of Dubai’s aviation landscape, as airlines take advantage of its available capacity to supplement DXB services. In the first ten months of the year, DWC welcomed 1.1 million passengers, marking a 36.6 percent increase driven by demand from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and Western European markets. Cargo volumes and aircraft movements at DWC have also seen significant growth, affirming its strategic importance.
One notable participant in this expansion is Eurowings. The airline has launched daily services from Stuttgart to DXB, added three weekly flights from Düsseldorf to DWC, and increased frequencies on routes to Berlin, Cologne, and Hannover. It has also introduced its Premium Bizclass product on the Berlin route, enhancing travel options for passengers.

Robert Whitehouse, vice president of Research at Dubai Airports, emphasized that the winter season is critical for the aviation sector. The extensive connectivity available this season reveals how travel demand is evolving. The noticeable increase in direct traffic suggests a balanced mix of inbound visitors and outbound residents, along with individuals choosing Dubai as their permanent residence. This reflects the resilience and diversity of Dubai’s aviation network.
The enhancements in this winter’s schedule illustrate robust confidence from airline partners in Dubai’s travel demand.
