Eiza González Embraces Sisterhood in Boots Riley’s ‘I Love Boosters’

In Boots Riley’s latest film, I Love Boosters, Eiza González portrays a cashier who also specializes in dialectical materialism. The character, who has a goth aesthetic and a penchant for vaping, marks a significant shift for González, as it is her first experience acting alongside an all-female ensemble. She noted that her career has often featured predominantly male casts, prompting her to question why she has been typecast in such roles.

A New Perspective on Casting

González, now 36, has developed a theory about the industry’s treatment of women. She believes that women often face two distinct phases in their careers: the initial phase where they are largely unknown, followed by a phase where they are pigeonholed into specific roles.

Her early career began in Mexico City, where she became a child star at the age of 16 in the telenovela Lola, érase una vez, later appearing in Nickelodeon’s Sueña conmigo. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2013, she navigated numerous auditions until she caught the attention of casting director Francine Maisler, who advocated for her to star opposite Jon Hamm in Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. González recalls competing against well-known actors but credits Maisler for believing in her potential.

Breakthrough and Typecasting

Baby Driver served as González’s breakout role, ushering in a second phase characterized by typecasting as the token female character in action films. Despite this, she enjoyed working alongside stars like Jake Gyllenhaal and Dwayne Johnson, participating in three films directed by Guy Ritchie. She sought to infuse her characters with depth, as she did in Baby Driver, where she introduced childlike elements to her character, such as a fondness for lollipops and bubble gum.

González expressed her desire for more challenging roles, which led her to audition for the Netflix adaptation of 3 Body Problem, a project from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. She was surprised to land the role of Auggie Salazar, a troubled nanotechnology expert, noting that such a character was not typically associated with her.

A Transformative Experience

Upon receiving the script for I Love Boosters, González felt she had reached a point in her career where she no longer needed to prove herself. A lengthy Zoom meeting with Riley revealed the director’s commitment to activism and social issues, prompting González to reflect on her own responsibilities as a Mexican woman. She acknowledged the privileges she lacks and the need for vigilance in her daily life, while also recognizing her unique platform to speak out.

The film’s production featured a predominantly female cast, including Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, and Demi Moore, as well as a female director of photography. González described the Atlanta set as a “sisterhood,” where discussions about shared experiences as women of color in Hollywood were common. She found it enlightening to see how different individuals navigate the challenges of the industry.

Future Projects and Aspirations

González is eager to maintain her momentum, having recently completed filming for the second season of 3 Body Problem, which explores the existence of extraterrestrial life. She expressed concern over current realities, particularly regarding artificial intelligence, which she finds alarming. Additionally, she is set to star in Iron Jane, a female bodybuilding drama that she likens to a blend of I, Tonya, Monster, and Requiem for a Dream. To prepare for this role, she has been training with Grant Roberts, known for transforming actors like Hilary Swank and Sydney Sweeney.

Despite her serious roles, González has a longing to explore romantic comedies. She expressed her desire to participate in the genre, noting that her friends often point out her lack of romantic scenes with co-stars like Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill.
