Emmerdale’s Joe-Warren Plant Reflects on 16 Years as Jacob Gallagher Amidst Rising Tensions in the Soap

Joe-Warren Plant, known for his role as Jacob Gallagher on Emmerdale, has been a fixture on the show since he was just eight years old. Now 24, Plant has been part of some of the series’ most significant storylines, and he expresses pride in his long tenure on the show.

Emotional Journey Through the Years

A recent YouTube video compiled by a fan chronicled Plant’s 16 years on Emmerdale, moving him to tears. He joined the show in 2010 and has spent two-thirds of his life in the fictional Dales. His character faced significant challenges, including being groomed by his teacher, Maya Stepney, and losing his on-screen mother, Leyla, in a tragic limousine accident last year.

Reflecting on his time in the series, Plant stated, “I’ve been in Emmerdale for more than half my life. I’ve always been here and I can still remember my early days as if it was yesterday. Everybody has looked out for me since day one.” He described watching the compilation video as a heartwarming experience that brought back many memories.

A Tribute to Family Support

Plant credits his parents, Warren and Steph, for their unwavering support, especially when he began acting at a young age. Tragically, his mother passed away from liver complications in November 2022. He expressed that it means a lot when people say his mother would have been proud of his achievements. One of his favorite early storylines involved Jacob running away, prompting the entire village to search for him.

Growth as an Actor

Plant acknowledges the influence of his fellow cast members in shaping his acting skills. He expressed admiration for Matthew Wolfenden and Roxy Shahidi, who played pivotal roles in his character’s development. He noted that his most impactful storyline was the year-long grooming plot that aired from 2018 to 2019, developed in collaboration with children’s charity Barnardo’s to raise awareness about sexual exploitation.

Now, as Jacob transitions into a trainee doctor, he faces new challenges, including bullying from his mentor, Dr. Caitlin Todd. This storyline will delve deeper into Jacob’s vulnerabilities, revisiting themes of manipulation and emotional turmoil.

Addressing Workplace Bullying

The storyline involving bullying is particularly relevant, as it aims to raise awareness about the issue in real-life workplaces. The British Medical Association has reported that two in five doctors have experienced bullying or harassment at work. Plant hopes that the storyline will encourage conversations among viewers and help those who may feel isolated.

He emphasized the supportive environment on the Emmerdale set, stating, “I’m very lucky. I have never been bullied. Everyone at Emmerdale seems so kind, compassionate, and they will try and fix things if anyone is down.”

Personal Life and Future Aspirations

Outside of his acting career, Plant is currently in a relationship with Isabella, with whom he recently went public. He expressed a desire to start a family in the future but acknowledged that he is not ready yet.

Plant remains open to new opportunities in television, having previously participated in Dancing on Ice, although he had to withdraw due to COVID-19. He would consider participating in reality shows like I’m A Celebrity if the opportunity arises.

Looking ahead, Plant is enthusiastic about his future with Emmerdale, expressing a desire to remain with the show for another decade. He stated, “I would love to be here in another ten years. It’s going to be a few rocky months for Jacob, but he is a kind-hearted person and I know he will come out on top eventually.”
