Joseph Chiu, the 24-year-old Canadian actor known for his role as Jordie Lin in the Prime Video series Every Year After, expressed his excitement upon learning that the show had been renewed for a second season. Chiu recounted the moment he received the news, stating, “I was screaming in my bedroom when they called me at 10 a.m.” The series is an adaptation of Carley Fortune’s romance novel Every Summer After, which premiered last month. Following its release, Prime Video confirmed the renewal, with the upcoming season set to follow the storyline of Fortune’s sequel, Our Golden Summer.

Chiu’s Journey to the Role

In the original novel, Chiu’s character is a supporting role, which provided him with the opportunity to develop his own interpretation of Jordie. He noted, “I was fully committed to the best friend role and doing the best of my abilities to make Sam seem more well-adjusted.” Drawing inspiration from characters like Stiles from Teen Wolf, he aimed to infuse his portrayal with a relatable energy.

Chiu’s path to acting was somewhat unconventional. Fresh from college graduation, he had initially pursued a different major before discovering his passion for performance. His journey into the entertainment industry began at the age of 14 when he trained as a K-pop artist under FNC Entertainment. “I was a trainee for three months,” he shared, recalling his early experiences in the industry. However, he ultimately decided to prioritize his education at his mother’s urging.

Chiu expressed gratitude for the success of the first season, acknowledging the unpredictability of the industry. He referenced his previous experience on the show Motorheads, where despite positive anticipation for a second season, it did not get renewed. “I was just happy with how season one worked out for me because the way that I was cast was just crazy in itself,” he remarked.

He emphasized the vulnerability of sharing parts of himself through Jordie, especially as a young actor still exploring his identity. “This was my first series regular role, and I’ve never been flown out for a role before,” he explained. Shooting on Bowen Island provided a picturesque backdrop for the series. Chiu noted the unique experience of commuting by boat each day, although he faced challenges with allergies that required him to rely on antihistamines. “It made me feel a little drowsy, so I drank a lot of black coffee,” he said, reflecting on the beauty of the location.

Chiu expressed a desire to see his character’s development in the upcoming season. He hopes to explore a deeper relationship between Jordie and Chantal, highlighting their chemistry that balances comedic moments with serious discussions. He also mentioned wanting to delve into Jordie’s past feelings for Delilah, drawing from personal experiences of unrequited love.

As a young actor, Chiu is excited about the growing attention on the Canadian film and television industry. He noted that he and fellow actor Alicia are among the few Canadian talents involved in the series, with Alicia based in Los Angeles. “If you book a series regular role on a US production that films in Toronto, your peers literally celebrate you,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of supporting fellow Canadian artists in an industry where opportunities can be limited.

Chiu aims to use his platform to uplift his peers and celebrate their achievements. “As Canadians, we don’t really have the access. It’s less spotlight, so I’m just trying to use my platform currently to celebrate my friends and also people that I really admire,” he concluded.
