FIFA Letter Claims Surface as Trump World Cup Controversy Puts FA Under Scrutiny
The Football Association (FA) is facing scrutiny over its apparent support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino amid a controversy involving former U.S. President Donald Trump and the World Cup. Reports indicate that the FA was prepared to endorse Infantino’s re-election bid for 2027 prior to the unfolding scandal involving the U.S. men’s national team.
FA’s Initial Support for Infantino
According to sources, the FA, led by Chairwoman Debbie Hewitt and Chief Executive Mark Bullingham, had agreed to formally back Infantino’s candidacy. Allegedly, they were poised to send a letter of support as the tri-nation World Cup commenced in Mexico in June. However, it remains unclear whether this communication was sent before Infantino became embroiled in the controversy with Trump.
Trump’s Involvement and Calls for Resignation
Infantino, who has held the FIFA presidency since 2016, is facing increasing calls for resignation. These demands stem from allegations that his close relationship with Trump has interfered with FIFA’s disciplinary processes. Trump publicly disclosed that he contacted Infantino to request FIFA’s intervention in lifting Folarin Balogun’s one-game ban following his ejection during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun’s suspension was subsequently lifted, allowing him to participate in the last-16 match against Belgium. This decision sparked outrage from both the Belgian FA and UEFA, which condemned FIFA’s involvement. UEFA characterized the move as crossing “a red line,” arguing that it undermined the integrity of the game.
Infantino’s Response
In response to the backlash, Infantino issued a statement denying that he had granted Trump’s request. He emphasized the independence of FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, stating that he sometimes agrees with their decisions and sometimes does not. He acknowledged that he regularly discusses FIFA World Cup matters with various global leaders, including Trump.
Accusations of Bias
The controversy has raised questions about FIFA’s integrity, particularly following Egypt’s controversial exit from the World Cup after a 3-2 loss to Argentina. Egyptian officials have alleged that FIFA favored Argentina, suggesting that critical refereeing decisions were influenced to ensure Messi’s team progressed.
FIFA’s statutes explicitly prohibit any form of political interference in its member associations. The governing body asserts that government interference in electoral processes is not permitted.
Calls for Accountability
As pressure mounts on Infantino, former FA Chairman David Bernstein and several Members of Parliament have called for his resignation. Despite the growing dissent, Infantino was re-elected unopposed in both 2019 and 2023 and may continue in his role beyond his current term.
While no rival candidates are expected for the 2027 election, Infantino’s ties with Trump have raised concerns among key figures in football. However, many influential stakeholders still view him as the leader capable of guiding FIFA into the future.
Support from Football Confederations
To maintain his presidency, Infantino requires 106 votes from the 211 member countries. Recent confirmations of support from CONMEBOL countries and unanimous backing from the Confederation of African Football’s 54 member associations, as well as the Asian Football Confederation’s 47 nations, could provide him with a total of 111 votes.
However, it remains uncertain whether the FA will uphold its initial support for Infantino or reconsider its position in light of recent events in North America.
