FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure to resign following a controversial proposal to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup. Despite the organization recently reporting record revenues of $15 billion from the 2026 World Cup, Infantino’s plans to partner with private investors led by Joshua Kushner have drawn widespread backlash from soccer legends, sports authorities, and world leaders alike.
Infantino’s Controversial Proposal
Infantino’s plan involved selling a 21 percent stake in a new division, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), to Kushner’s private equity group, Thrive Capital, for $4.2 billion. FIFA argued that this arrangement would generate substantial funds for global sports development. However, the proposal was met with fierce opposition, with European soccer body UEFA labeling it an attempt to sell “the soul” of soccer.
Global Backlash and Calls for Resignation
Even after Infantino officially scrapped the proposal on July 31, the backlash continued. Prominent figures like Portuguese soccer legend Luis Figo and Javier Tebas, president of Italy’s La Liga, have publicly called for his resignation. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed a lack of confidence in Infantino, stating, “It should be fatal.”
The Norwegian Football Federation echoed this sentiment, with its president, Lise Klaveness, declaring, “The trust is now gone for us.” An open letter signed by UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin and other key figures criticized Infantino for breaking trust through his actions.
UEFA’s Boycott and Support for a No-Confidence Vote
UEFA has maintained its stance against Infantino, stating that its boycott of FIFA tournaments remains in effect. The upcoming Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland will test this position. UEFA is reportedly seeking support from other soccer confederations to call an emergency FIFA Congress aimed at triggering a vote of no confidence in Infantino.
To initiate this process, UEFA, which has 55 member associations, needs to gather support from at least 43 members. However, Infantino still has backing from several confederations, including the Confederation of African Football and CONMEBOL, which have publicly expressed their support.
Allegations and FIFA’s Defense
Adding to the controversy, a report surfaced alleging that a female employee received a six-figure departure payment after a purported relationship with Infantino during his tenure as UEFA general secretary. While UEFA confirmed the payment, FIFA has categorically denied any allegations of inappropriate conduct, asserting that no complaints have ever been raised against Infantino.
In response to the growing criticism, FIFA accused detractors of attempting to undermine its democratic processes. As the pressure mounts, Infantino faces a critical juncture in his presidency, with the potential for a significant shift in leadership looming on the horizon.
