The contract, sealed on the third day of the event, focuses on the joint development of a state-of-the-art LiDAR-based Obstacle Avoidance System (OAS) specifically designed for Indian military helicopters. The newly formed Obstacle Avoidance System (OAS) aims to enhance the safety of military helicopters by protecting them from various hazards, including power lines, cables, pylons, and towers — obstacles that are often difficult for pilots to detect, especially during low visibility conditions. Such inefficiencies can be particularly dangerous during night operations or in degraded visual environments (DVE).

The OAS utilizes a sophisticated LiDAR system to continuously scan the airspace ahead, offering timely warnings to the crew. This capability is increasingly crucial for modern military operations where aircraft may need to navigate in challenging conditions, such as dust, fog, or hostile environments that elevate risk profiles.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

Utilizing HENSOLDT’s advanced SferiSense LiDAR sensor, the system is equipped with an onboard DVE computer that converts raw data into a user-friendly visual display. This allows pilots to “see” the terrain and surrounding obstacles despite environmental limitations. Official technical details indicate that the LiDAR system boasts a detection probability of at least 99.5 percent within the first second, and can identify obstacles, including thin wires, from distances exceeding 1,000 meters, even when flying parallel to them.

Designed with the intent to minimize the risks associated with Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), the OAS will also enhance the safety of helicopter operations during challenging DVE conditions, such as brownouts and whiteouts.
