Harvey Keitel Advocates Film as a Catalyst for Change, Citing Aristotle’s Wisdom
Renowned actor Harvey Keitel emphasized the transformative power of film and the arts during a recent appearance at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF). The festival, celebrating its 60th edition in its 80th year, runs until July 11 and serves as a platform for artists to showcase their work and engage in meaningful dialogue about societal issues.
The Role of Arts in Addressing Societal Divides
Keitel articulated his belief that the arts play a crucial role in bridging divides in today’s polarized world. He noted that many individuals are at odds over trivial matters, lacking the understanding that acceptance and tolerance are essential. Quoting Aristotle, he stated, “Words alone are not enough to change a culture. Aesthetic force is needed, and that is the artist.” He highlighted the importance of film festivals like KVIFF, Cannes, and Tribeca as venues where artists can express their perspectives and foster change.
He further elaborated that change is vital for societal growth, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts and political strife. Keitel remarked that the arts can help individuals overcome biases and evolve into more compassionate beings.
Personal Growth Through Acting
Keitel also discussed the personal benefits of engaging with the arts. He described acting as a means of self-discovery, stating, “The real gift is learning to know yourself through art.” He emphasized that this journey can help individuals move beyond rigid identities defined by race, religion, or nationality. His experiences in New York theater exposed him to diverse beliefs, which he credited with significantly shaping his worldview.
Career Reflections and Future Projects
When asked about his decision not to direct films, Keitel explained that his extensive acting career has often involved collaborating closely with directors, effectively allowing him to direct himself in many instances. He acknowledged that while he lacked formal training in directing, he was fortunate to learn from esteemed filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.
Keitel shared insights for aspiring actors, urging them to commit to their craft through study and practice. He noted that personal development is equally important, stating, “It takes work, and growing as a human being takes work.”
Currently, Keitel is working on a film with his wife, Daphna Kastner Keitel, who is also a filmmaker. Although he could not disclose the title or specific details, he described the project as a journey of discovery aimed at combating prejudice and narrow-mindedness through the art of filmmaking.
Life in Los Angeles vs. New York
While Keitel maintains a residence in New York, he expressed his enjoyment of life in Los Angeles. He reminisced about the New York of the past, suggesting that the city could revert to its former cultural vibrancy once theater returns to prominence. He noted that the landscape of New York has changed significantly since the pandemic, impacting its cultural fabric.
Honors at KVIFF
Earlier in the festival, Keitel presented the Crystal Globe award to acclaimed cinematographer Robert Richardson. This marks Keitel’s third appearance at KVIFF, where he previously received a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema in 2004. In 2015, he returned to introduce Paolo Sorrentino’s film Youth, which won the Právo Audience Award.
As part of the festival’s special programming, KVIFF is screening Mean Streets, a film that holds personal significance for Keitel.
A Star-Studded Event
The festival has attracted a host of notable attendees, including actors Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Jesse Eisenberg, alongside cinematographer Robert Richardson, who received accolades from Keitel. The double anniversary edition of KVIFF has drawn significant attention, further solidifying its status as a prominent event in the film industry.
