The Hidden Costs of Subscriptions: How Small Payments Can Add Up to Thousands

In today’s fast-paced world, the convenience of subscription services has transformed how we consume entertainment, software, and even wellness products. However, this ease of access can lead to unexpected financial burdens, as many consumers are discovering just how quickly small monthly payments can add up to significant annual costs.

The Subscription Trap

Omar Al-Harbi, a 29-year-old from Alkhobar, recently found himself shocked by his monthly subscription expenses. Upon reviewing his banking app, he realized he was spending nearly SR2,000 (approximately $533) each month on various subscriptions, totaling over SR23,000 a year. His subscriptions included popular services like Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, and Adobe Creative Cloud, among others. “I knew I had a lot of subscriptions but I always thought of them separately,” he explained. “That was the first time it felt like a real expense.”

Changing Consumer Habits

This experience reflects a broader trend in consumer spending habits. Many services, from entertainment to fitness and cloud storage, are increasingly accessed through recurring payments rather than one-time purchases. The convenience of automatic renewals can make it easy to overlook these expenses. Al-Harbi noted that while identifying his subscriptions was straightforward, deciding which ones to cancel proved more challenging. “Each subscription has a reason,” he said, highlighting the difficulty in cutting back.

Faisal Al-Dossari, a 32-year-old video editor in Riyadh, shares a similar sentiment. For him, subscriptions are essential to his work, encompassing software like Adobe Premiere Pro and various music licensing services. “I need editing software, music licensing, cloud storage, and file-transfer services. Cancelling one can actually slow down my work,” he stated. Al-Dossari expressed concern over the permanence of these expenses, noting that annual renewals can easily be forgotten until a significant charge appears on his account.

Health and Wellness Subscriptions

Subscriptions are not limited to entertainment and professional tools. Maha Al-Qahtani, 27, has a range of recurring expenses tied to her health and wellness routine, including gym memberships, fitness classes, and meal delivery services. “I don’t really think of them as subscriptions because in my head they are part of my health routine,” she said. However, upon reviewing her expenses, she realized the total was higher than expected, revealing overlaps in services that could be streamlined.

In contrast, Khalid Al-Salem, 35, took a different approach by canceling nearly all his subscriptions, including streaming services and productivity apps. “I realized I was paying for convenience more than I was paying for things I actually used,” he explained. By carefully selecting which services to keep, he saved nearly SR10,000 a year without feeling deprived. Al-Salem now rotates his streaming services and avoids free trials unless he sets a cancellation reminder.

Finding Balance

Al-Harbi has begun to make similar adjustments after recognizing the scale of his spending. He canceled several subscriptions but still values the convenience they provide. “I just don’t want SR2,000 leaving my account every month without me noticing,” he said. For many consumers, the first step toward saving money is simply understanding where their money is going. In an economy increasingly built around recurring payments, it’s essential to regularly review subscriptions to avoid financial leaks.
