Hyperice’s Anthony Katz Transforms Kobe Bryant’s Challenge into a Billion-Dollar Recovery Brand

Anthony Katz, the founder of Hyperice, transformed a personal challenge into a billion-dollar recovery brand, gaining recognition from some of the world’s top athletes and securing a partnership with Nike. The journey began in 2009 when Katz, an avid basketball player, sought relief for his aching knees after years of wear and tear. His homemade solution would eventually lay the groundwork for a revolutionary product in the sports recovery market.

The Kobe Co-sign

The inception of Hyperice occurred after Katz returned from a year in Australia, where he noticed the inadequacy of traditional ice bags used for recovery. Inspired by the practices of basketball legends like Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, Katz designed a more effective knee sleeve. He collaborated with Alita Wetsuits, a California-based neoprene factory, to create a prototype using leftover materials. This initial design caught the attention of his friend Ryan, who worked closely with Kobe Bryant.

Ryan’s request for a pair of Katz’s knee sleeves marked the first step towards a business venture. Katz delivered the prototypes to Bryant, who expressed interest in the concept but provided constructive feedback, suggesting improvements to enhance the product’s effectiveness. This interaction ignited Katz’s ambition to pursue Hyperice as a full-time business.

Mamba Mentality

Encouraged by Bryant’s endorsement, Katz envisioned a brand that could attract a wide range of athletes. He began expanding his product line to include recovery devices for shoulders and backs. Despite facing numerous challenges, including a setback with manufacturing, Katz persevered, eventually establishing a supply chain entirely within California.

By 2011, Katz had garnered significant attention, including a $500,000 investment from an NFL player’s family office, despite having no sales at that time. He continued to refine his products and sought to make Bryant the face of Hyperice. However, after facing obstacles with Bryant’s management, Katz pivoted to LeBron James, who first used Hyperice products in 2012.

Full Circle Moments

The brand officially launched as Hyperice, inspired by Kobe Bryant’s Hyper Dunks, and achieved approximately $350,000 in sales in its first year. Katz’s innovative spirit led to the development of new products, including the Vyper vibrating foam roller and the Hypervolt massage gun, which significantly boosted the company’s revenue.

In a notable partnership, Hyperice collaborated with Nike to create a recovery slide that integrates advanced cushioning and technology. This partnership represents a full-circle moment for Katz, who had once been told that a deal with Nike was unattainable. Additionally, in 2019, Katz shared the Hypervolt with influential figures, including Kobe Bryant, who acknowledged the brand’s evolution since its humble beginnings.
