Indian Metal Bands Target Dubai as Next International Destination

Vinod Varma: The Architect of Metal in the Gulf

Bengaluru-raised, Dubai-based metal gig organizer Vinod Varma is set to bring Mumbai’s Demonic Resurrection to Dubai on November 1, 2025, as part of his Desert Inferno gig series. Varma emphasizes the importance of resilience in both his journey and that of Sahil Makhija, also known as Demonstealer, the founder and frontman of Demonic Resurrection. “Sahil is always so resilient; he never gives up,” Varma says during a video call from his office. “This is what it is for me as well. I’m a resilient person. There are ups and downs, but you don’t give up.”

Resurrection Metal Events: A Legacy of Passion

Varma co-founded Resurrection Metal Events Dubai alongside a South African promoter to offer a platform for international and local bands. Since its inception between 2009 and 2012, the organization has hosted a plethora of acts, including Dutch metal legends Pestilence and German thrash veterans Destruction. The roster also features popular Indian bands such as Godless, Gutslit, and The Down Troddence.

Varma possesses an extensive knowledge of the metal scene in India and the Middle East. He recalls the early days, including Oman’s black metal act Arabia, which played his first organized gig at the Grand Hyatt in Muscat in 2009. He also reminisces about legendary Indian bands from the ’90s, such as Millennium, who left a lasting impact on the culture.

Personal Journey: From Bengaluru to Dubai

Initially moving from Bengaluru to Oman in 2004 as an economic migrant, Varma quickly transitioned into a media job. After a stint in Bahrain, he relocated to Dubai in 2012, just as the region’s music scene began to flourish with festivals like the Dubai Desert Rock Festival. This festival featured prominent acts such as Megadeth and Iron Maiden, creating a vibrant gathering for metal fans across the region.

Despite this growth, Varma felt a sense of isolation when he first arrived in Muscat. Missing the metal community, he sought out like-minded individuals, leading him to meet other promoters. Inspired, he organized his first gig in 2009, laying the foundation for what would become a burgeoning underground metal scene.

Building a Community Through Music

As the Middle East evolved, so did Varma’s endeavors. He began performing as a metal DJ under the name DJ Wynn, building a network of fans and venues. His efforts culminated in 2015 with a significant milestone when he brought Mumbai’s thrash metal band Devoid for their first international performance, a landmark event for Indian bands in the UAE.

With Resurrection Metal Events now hosting monthly shows, Varma views his media career as complementary to his passion for music. “My daily work as a media professional is good, but metal is my passion,” he states.

Resilience Amid Economic Challenges

While notable Indian bands and metal enthusiasts are increasingly keen to make Dubai a destination for performances, Varma encounters challenges in the enterprise. The expenses associated with venues and equipment rental can be daunting, especially without brand sponsorships. He relies on ticket sales and his savings to fund events, emphasizing the necessity for resilience in an often unyielding environment.

“There’s a bit of competition among promoters in Dubai, but I’m all for creating a larger touring circuit for metal bands,” Varma explains. He highlights the difficulties faced by Indian passport holders in securing visas for neighboring countries like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, a barrier that complicates regional tours.

Demonic Resurrection’s Return

Demonic Resurrection’s upcoming performance marks their return to Dubai after previous shows in 2014 and 2015. As they prepare to celebrate their 25th anniversary, the band considers Dubai a vital stop on their touring circuit. Makhija notes, “The deal has been exactly the same,” referring to the arrangements made by promoters covering expenses and facilitating merchandise sales.

The band’s setlist will span their career, featuring tracks from A Darkness Descends to their more recent work like “Necromancer.” This performance serves as a testament to their enduring resonance within the metal community.

A Growing Metal Scene

Other Indian acts like Gutslit have also found success in Dubai, with their appearance at Varma’s gigs serving as a launchpad for broader tours. Bassist Gurdip Singh Narang describes Dubai as a promising hub for Indian bands, allowing them to gain global exposure. He remarks, “The crowd there is super supportive and it’s a lot of people from all over the world.”

Similarly, Makhija points to the potential for developing a multi-city touring circuit in the Middle East. “Creating three or four shows in the region would lighten the burden on individual promoters,” he emphasizes.

Looking to the Future

Varma is optimistic yet realistic about the future of the metal scene in Dubai. Although there are undeniable challenges tied to venue costs and logistical hurdles, he remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant community. With Desert Inferno shows already scheduled through May 2026, Varma understands the dedication it requires to pursue a career in metal, stating, “The moral of the story is to be resilient.”
