India’s Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned on Saturday, signaling a significant victory for youth protesters who had been demonstrating against examination paper leaks. These protests had escalated into a major challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
Protests Erupt in New Delhi
Celebrations erupted at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, the epicenter of the protests, where thousands of young demonstrators chanted victory slogans and danced. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which led the movement, announced the cessation of protests following Pradhan’s resignation.
Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of CJP, expressed the sentiment of the crowd, stating, “We have done it,” as cheers filled the air.
Context of the Protests
The protests, which have been described as some of the largest in recent years, gained momentum as opposition politicians began to support the youth and disrupted parliamentary proceedings. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for 26 days in support of the movement, described Pradhan’s resignation as “a victory of peace, patience & perseverance.”
Following the announcement, Health Minister J. P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh, a junior minister in Modi’s office, held a joint press conference with CJP leaders, where they confirmed that the protests would end under an agreement that no action would be taken against demonstrators.
Celebrations and Security Measures
As the protests intensified, Prime Minister Modi deviated from his usual scripted addresses to post a personal video expressing his distress over the exam paper leaks and promising strict action. However, protesters remained steadfast in their demands for Pradhan’s resignation.
On Saturday, the atmosphere at Jantar Mantar was jubilant, with attendees shouting “Jai Hind,” a patriotic slogan meaning “Victory to India.” The national anthem played over loudspeakers as sweets were distributed among the crowd.
Approximately 1,000 police officials were stationed nearby to maintain order, while roads around Connaught Place, a central business district near the protest site, were closed due to the swelling crowd.
Pradhan, who has been a senior member of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party since 2021, was the second minister to resign amid a scandal since Modi took office in 2014.
Restoration of Internet Access
Following Pradhan’s resignation, federal authorities restored mobile internet access around the protest site, which had been blocked for most of the week.
Protester Tluanga Ralte remarked, “Young generation is here. This is a win for the constitution,” while holding a copy of the Indian constitution. “We are not a lazy generation.”
Opposition Calls for Accountability
The CJP movement, which has been active since June, saw heightened tensions after police injured numerous students during a crackdown on protesters marching toward parliament.
Opposition Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi welcomed Pradhan’s resignation but insisted that those responsible for the violence against students must be held accountable. He called for Prime Minister Modi to apologize for the use of force against the demonstrators.
Pradhan’s resignation marks a pivotal moment in Indian politics, reflecting the growing discontent among youth regarding government policies and accountability.
Students and activists across various states, including West Bengal, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, have participated in protests, demanding Pradhan’s resignation and boycotting classes.
