JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Analysis: Shift 1 Challenging, Shift 2 Moderate; Comprehensive Review Available
The JEE Advanced 2026 examination, organized by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, commenced on Sunday, with Paper 1 eliciting varied responses from candidates. The exam is structured into two shifts: Shift 1 took place from 9 AM to 12 PM, while Shift 2 is scheduled from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Participants and experts characterized the morning shift as challenging, lengthy, and heavily reliant on conceptual understanding and multi-step problem-solving.
JEE Advanced Shift 1 Analysis
Initial assessments indicate that Physics was the most difficult and time-consuming section, while Mathematics presented lengthy, calculation-heavy questions. In contrast, Chemistry was viewed as moderately challenging, featuring several tricky and logical questions.
Physics: Difficult and Lengthy
The Physics section in Shift 1 was broadly recognized as demanding due to its focus on multi-concept integration and extensive calculations. Many candidates faced difficulties with time management, as numerous questions necessitated prolonged numerical work and a solid grasp of concepts.
Key topics included Modern Physics, Current Electricity, Electrostatics, Magnetism and Electromagnetic Induction (EMI), Rotation, Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) and Waves, Thermodynamics, Optics, and Fluid Mechanics.
Questions from Modern Physics encompassed the photoelectric effect and radioactive decay. The Electrostatics segment featured capacitor-based multi-concept problems, while Magnetism and EMI concentrated on induced current and practical applications. The Rotation questions were particularly challenging due to their calculation-heavy nature. Thermodynamics involved graph interpretation, and Fluid Mechanics included a complex application-based question.
The overall trend pointed towards a greater emphasis on analytical reasoning and integrated concept application rather than straightforward formula substitution.
Chemistry: Moderate but Tricky
Chemistry was deemed moderate relative to other subjects. Experts noted that while the section was manageable, the phrasing of questions required careful reading and conceptual comprehension.
Physical Chemistry included topics such as Ionic Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics, Chemical Kinetics, and Solutions and Colligative Properties. Organic Chemistry focused on named reactions, stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms, and practical organic conversions, while biomolecules and polymers had lower weightage.
Inorganic Chemistry covered Coordination Compounds, Chemical Bonding, p-Block Chemistry, Salt Analysis, and some questions from Metallurgy. Students observed that Inorganic Chemistry closely adhered to NCERT concepts, while Organic Chemistry leaned more towards logic than rote memorization. Calculations in Physical Chemistry were relatively straightforward.
Mathematics: Lengthy and Calculation Intensive
Mathematics was rated as moderate to difficult, with lengthy calculations being the primary hurdle. Although many questions were solvable, students struggled to complete the section within the allotted time.
Key topics included Definite Integration, Differential Equations, Vectors and 3D Geometry, Matrices and Determinants, Probability, Complex Numbers, Conic Sections, Functions and ITF, and Sequence and Series.
Multiple-correct-answer questions were particularly challenging, and Coordinate Geometry had a higher weightage than many candidates anticipated. Observations from Dr. Saurabh Kumar, CEO and Founder of Shiksha Nation, indicated that the paper reflected the traditional nature of JEE Advanced, emphasizing conceptual clarity, analytical thinking, and time management over rote learning.
JEE Advanced Shift 2 Analysis
The JEE Advanced examination for Shift 2 on May 17, 2026, was rated as moderate to difficult overall. Mathematics was perceived as comparatively easier, while Physics and Chemistry presented greater challenges due to their conceptual depth and lengthy problem-solving requirements.
The paper adhered closely to the syllabus and was balanced across chapters, though time management remained a significant concern.
Ajay Sharma, National Academic Director – Engineering at Aakash Educational Services Limited, noted that the paper aligned closely with Aakash FTS standards, falling between Code A and Code B in terms of difficulty.
Shift 2 Pattern
- Single Correct: 4 questions (+3, –1)
- Multiple Correct: 5 questions (+4, –1 with partial marking)
- Numerical Value: 5 questions (+4, 0)
- Paragraph Type: 4 questions (+2, 0)
Physics and Chemistry were rated as moderate to difficult, while Mathematics was considered moderate.
