Katie Holmes, Meg Ryan, and Jodie Foster Strengthen Female Filmmaker Initiatives at Chanel Tribeca Festival Luncheon
On Friday, prominent figures from Hollywood gathered at the Greenwich Hotel to celebrate the “Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program.” This annual luncheon, co-hosted by Tribeca Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal, featured established and emerging creatives, including Meg Ryan, Jodie Foster, Katie Holmes, Catherine Hardwicke, Myha’la, AnnaSophia Robb, and Tommy Dorfman.
Celebrating Female Leadership
The event showcased attendees dressed in chic summer Chanel attire, mingling with key figures from the festival and Tribeca Enterprises. Rebecca Glashow, CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, highlighted the festival’s commitment to female representation, noting that over 70 percent of their team comprises women. She emphasized that this statistic reflects a culture that values diverse voices, stating, “Beyond the number, though, it reflects a culture built on the belief that diverse voices make things stronger, more creative and more connected to the world around us.”
Acknowledging Achievements
Glashow introduced Rosenthal, who congratulated director Quinn Whitney Wilson on the Netflix acquisition of her documentary debut, Jean-Michel Basquiat. Following the applause, Rosenthal expressed gratitude to Chanel for their ongoing support of the program, reinforcing the importance of female filmmakers in the industry.
Voices of Change
During her address, Rosenthal shared insights about the festival’s origins and its mission. She recalled that Tribeca was founded on the belief that culture can help heal divisions caused by fear and hatred. “Twenty-five years later, I believe that as strongly as I did then, and Through Her Lens is very much a part of that vision,” she stated.
The gathering included notable attendees such as Maggie Rogers, Cazzie David, Ella Beatty, Ari Graynor, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Debi Mazar, and Francesca Scorsese. Rosenthal addressed the broader implications of representation in the film industry, stating, “This has never just been about representation. It’s about power. Who gets funding? Who gets the microphone? Who gets to share the narrative? Who gets remembered?”
The Impact of Storytelling
Rosenthal further articulated the significance of storytelling in shaping culture. “It changes what we believe is possible. That is why the work you do matters,” she said. “You help us understand one another; you challenge what we think we know; you create empathy in a world that increasingly rewards outrage.”
Honoring the Past
Days prior, at the Perelman Performing Arts Center, Rosenthal and Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro celebrated the festival’s 25th anniversary, honoring former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s contributions. Bloomberg recounted the festival’s inception during a time of uncertainty in Lower Manhattan, stating, “Few believed that the neighborhood could become stronger and more vibrant than ever. But I know that both Bob and Jane did.”
De Niro acknowledged Bloomberg’s vital role in the festival’s success, remarking, “We wouldn’t have even gotten to the first one without Mike’s innovative and passionate support.”
A Vision for the Future
Rosenthal praised Bloomberg and his administration for revitalizing Lower Manhattan through the festival. She also recognized the contributions of other politicians, including former Governor George Pataki, who actively supported the festival’s early days. “Mike’s predecessor self-styles himself as America’s mayor, but we were blessed to have Mike Bloomberg as New York’s mayor,” she stated.
The events underscored the authenticity, resilience, and community spirit that drive the festival. Hardwicke reflected on the festival’s history, noting the remarkable vision that led to its establishment. “How can anybody not admire hell out of her?” she said, referring to Rosenthal’s leadership.
Building Community Through Film
Drena De Niro expressed her admiration for Rosenthal’s dedication, stating, “Jane is one of the most focused people I know. She doesn’t spend time on all the things that are reasons why not to make it happen.”
The festival aims to foster a collaborative environment, where filmmakers can share their stories and connect with one another. “You realize we all want the same thing. We all want to tell our story, we all want respect, we all want to connect,” De Niro added.
Future Aspirations
Glashow outlined the festival’s goals, emphasizing the importance of audience growth and community engagement. “How do we make sure they are responding, that they know this is a place where they can tell their stories and be supported?” she asked.
She also discussed the potential for expanding the festival’s reach, including international initiatives. “Taking it internationally is a very big priority,” she noted, highlighting the festival’s unique approach and its resonance with local populations.
