Lando Norris Secures ‘Masterpiece’ Pole Position in Madrid Despite Late Slide

A remarkable performance by Lando Norris secured him pole position at the recent qualifying session in Madrid, marking his third pole in four races this season. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella described the lap as a “bit of a masterpiece,” highlighting its significance not only for the 2026 season but also for Norris’ career.

Norris’ qualifying lap was particularly noteworthy as he managed to secure pole despite a slide at the 22nd and final corner, which cost him over 0.3 seconds. Nevertheless, he had already built enough of a lead earlier in the lap to clinch his 19th career pole position.

The McLaren pit wall celebrated the unexpected achievement, with Stella noting, “I would say that definitely this was one of the most impressive laps that I witnessed, as somebody that watches telemetry in 450 Grands Prix.” He acknowledged that the team had not been performing at a level that suggested they could secure pole position, particularly struggling in the first sector of the track.

Stella elaborated on the challenges faced during the weekend, stating, “We were lacking quite significantly in the first sector – low-speed and kerbing – and for the drivers, it was a very difficult car to nail a lap.” He emphasized that the pole lap would have been even more impressive without the time lost at the end.

The McLaren engineering team focused on improving the car’s performance in critical areas, particularly the tight corners at Turns 1, 2, and 5. Despite a gearbox issue that limited Norris’ track time in FP2, the team made significant adjustments leading into FP3 and qualifying.

Stella praised both Norris and the team for their efforts, stating, “We had the clear objective from the first runs in practice to add some low-speed performance and kerbing performance.” He noted that the car’s characteristics made it more suited for high-speed sections, complicating the low-speed handling.
